Usually to fit other characters on the board. Am I right in thinking American keyboards only have half height return keys?

How many rows of keys does return take up? Does it look like this:

When I was researching boards all US ones had a small return key whereas all British boards have it full sized.

Depends on which "big one" you mean. See ISO vs "Big ass" in Ripster's pic. The latter was designed to accommodate people used to the Selectric typewriter layout.
