Hey guys so I am moving soon and I am going to be paying my own electric bill

I have three computers. One unraid server (will be on 24/7), one music server (vortex box) probably going to be on 24/7, and then my sig rig. If I put my sig rig into sleep mode (should I use the hybrid sleep in windows 7?) when not in use will this save money? Is it bad to put it in and out of sleep a lot?

It'll definitely result in electricity bills that are lower than they otherwise would be. Also, as long as you reboot every single day, you should never have problems.

Turn off when not in use. Been debated here and most agree.

I know in my FreeNAS, I have settings for it to run down the HDD's or go into low power mode when nothing is accessing it. My FreeNAS takes forever to boot, so that might be an option to look at. So that, it's on, but it's sipping energy.

yeah unraid takes forever as well (i'd guess like 2-3 mins?). I think there is a way to do this with it as well I will have to ask on the unraid forum.

Same. Since it sits in a corner of my room and boots off a SD card, boot can take forever. And I hate having to turn it on and wait forever to access it. So I have it turn off the HDD's after 60's mins of inactivity.

Alternatively, check the settings in your BIOS. See if there is anything in there that you can tinker with. I use pretty old hardware on my FreeNAS box so I don't have all the fancy features. But it's worth giving a look.

I know there is settings like "Wake on LAN" or something like that.

Do you know exactlty what wake on lan is for?
Yeah I know I can set my HDDs on unraid to spin down after a certain length of time. This helps with power? And lol nice avatar (lights?)

Quite interesting. Worth a read.
I don't know what it is for specifically. But I just read the first paragraph.
But I would assume so, if they are spinned down. Then they aren't consuming power. But it does require some power to spin them back up. So I don't believe it would be something useful if your accessing the drive every so often.

& yes. Lights.
