Day three on Overclock.net and I'm already folding; I didn't even know what folding was on day one!

So I've installed the new v7 client (wish I knew about it before I went through all the trouble installing the previous SMP client >.<)

I've gotten my GPU and CPU folding, however the computer is from 2005. The CPU is an Intel Pentium D820 and the GPU is a GeForce 210

The CPU seems fine, but I started folding with the GPU, then clicked on 'viewer' while it was running, expected it to be a bit 'shutter-ish', instead the system BSOD'd... cause of the problem: NVIDIA driver stopped responding.

Like I said it happened within the first 3-5 minutes of GPU folding, and immediately after I clicked viewer. After I rebooted, and started the client up again, let the GPU fold and it's fine now. I just wanted to know, is letting my tiny GeForce 210 fold a good idea? And second, will letting it fold really give me that much more folding performance?

Btw I'm not really proud of my system, just need some extra $$$ so that I can do a Sandy Bridge build!

Well the gt 210 isn't too powerful, so it won't give you much. I'm not sure that it's a bad idea, foldingn is just like a gpu stress test, so if your card can't run folding, you don't have a stable card

. When you bsod'd, I'm guessing it was because the gpu got too much load on it. I've had that happen with my cpu.

Sounds good. It hasn't crashed yet, I gave it a slight overclock and am gonna let the CPU and GPU run on the PC overnight. Hopefully I won't wake up to a BSOD, it's been running fine for the past 20 minutes. On another note, my iMac is currently handling SMP WUs better than all my computers! (the i5 probablly helps...)

So normally, if a CPU (say an i5 2500k) were paired with an appropriate GPU (say a GTX460), which one would perform better? I guess what I'm asking is: Is GPU processing or CPU processing better for folding? Since they both process in different ways. Give details on your answer if you can!

When you get a CPU with 8+ threads, then you';d be getting more PPD from the CPUs than comparable GPUs.

However, a -bigadv WU will take 2-3 days to drop, and one failure means a missed WU and a few days with no points. You also need to keep the CPU Folding as much as possible; any downtime means less bonus points, and lower PPD.

A high end GPU, however, will be posting points every hour or so. It will have less points over a 2-3 day period than the CPU, but will have more consistent points. And while there are no bonus points for GPUs (which means you can stop Folding for an hour or 2 and not lose any points), GPUs will have a higher power consuption.
