Limit to number of folders?

I noticed that when setting up a folding client it asks for a machine ID from 1-8. What if you have more than 8 CPUs/GPUs folding?

Also, is there a limit to the number of GPUs that can fold on a single computer other than the number of slots there are?

There's 8 machine IDs per computer, not total.

Oh its per computer?

So I've been setting different machine ID's across all my PCs for nothing? lol

lol, just pretend I never asked

But for real though.... theoretically speaking, what if you wanted to use a motherboard with 5 PCIe slots and fill them up with 9800GX2s, and slap on a quad? That would come out to 12 clients on a single PC....is that just not possible?

Apparently.

Is there even a board with 5 PCIe x16 slots? 0.o

not yet, but there will be.

But you would be limited to single slot cards.
IIRC XP/Vista there is a max # of monitors you can use. I think its 5.

Yeah, the ASUS WS Evolution

See that x4 slot at the top? The back of it is open so that you can still fit an x16 card in it without any modding.

I was gonna use that board for my TEC setup but apparently its not a great overclocker, so I'm just gonna use it for a folding rig/server (there's no way it will sell for anything worth it in the condition its in).

So no more than 5 GPUs per PC?

i just took a look at my gpu config and i have numbers that go from 1-16. so i think at most you can have 16 instances going. but if you have smp going on too. then 15 i guess.

im sure one will fit there, but you wont be able to have any RAM

There's actually 16 clients per rig, so you're good to go...

What the hell do I need RAM for, it doesn't give any ppd!!!

Nah but for real, that's what this is for.

And Oh yeahhh....its 16 on GPU clients. Ok, no worries here then!

That would be a riser card in change the install height and even perhaps use a right angle card with it in an extra low height case to mount the card horiziontally.

Couldn't possibly be a real ASUS card, where's all the copper?

QFT

Lol, many of us are already running up to six clients on one PC, 2 X SMP with VMware and up to four GPU2 clients on the MSI P6N Diamond.

The 9800GX2 requires 2 Slots.
Even when changing cooler.
So you would need to use expansive Riser Cards.

All ends in the fact that build in multiple Systems is cheaper ;o)

Good point with the riser card...

But nah, in the long run using as few motherboards as possible is the cheapest. Because

a) For each PC you have to pay for the MB and RAM (and maybe a case) - none of which produce PPD

b) For each PC you have to pay for powering the MB and RAM - neither of which produce PPD

c) Since GPUs produce more PPD than CPUs, maximizing the GPU/CPU ratio will naturally yeild the best solution for the money.

Let me see 9800GTX2 x 5.
On that board would be fun lol no room for fans to breath ya think.
Maybe 3 but not 5 lol. I do like the looks of the board and its layout.
