Linksys WMP54G Wireless PCI Network Card giving me poor or no connectivity!

Hi all. I just got a Linksys WMP54G Wireless PCI Network Card and installed it in my Socket A AMD Athlon XP 2000+ rig. The problem with is is that the current router, a Linksys BEFW11S4 that i have is only 5 metres away from the WMP54G Wireless PCI card in another room.

At first, there was no internet connection at all. I then changed the setting in my router to [Preamble Type: Short Preamble] as this setting was recommended for high network traffic areas. After i changed this setting, my wireless adapter received the signal.

It stated that the signal was between very good and excellent. However, no matter what i tried, the transfer rate between my router and the wireless card was only 1Mbps.

When i join games in Warcraft 3, i will always get disconnected after the game has loaded. When surfing the net, it seems fine as usual but a little slow.

If i move my whole rig about 1m away from the router, the signal goes back to 11Mbps. I even tried making a very long makeshift antenna and connect it to my PCI card but it still reports the same transfer rate.

May i know any way to solve this besides moving my whole PC closer to the router or purchasing a seperate longer antenna from Linksys? Thank you.

Maybe try changing the wireless channel on your router. Mine defaults to channel 11 and i get horrible connection, but when I switch it to 6, it seems alright.
You might have a LOT of interference. Do you live in a large block of flats?

Scan the local area and see what other wireless networks are in your area. See also which channels they are on. Try not to use the same channel as the stronger signals in your area.
Weird. I managed to get it to go back to 11mbps. I used the linksys program and it somehow managed to "see" the SSID broadcast that i disabled in my router. My router currently has SSID disabled with a MAC filter. No WEP or WPA security. Weird.

Many years ago when i tried to use WPA it was always acquiring the network address but could never do so. WEP worked but the signal was very unstable.

Today, i tried to use the WPA-PSK security and the same thing happened. Is my router settings screwed or is the whole router is screwed and its time to get a new one?
I would try setting EVERYTHING in the router back to default and go from there. If it works good, then you know it's one of the settings that you changed. Another thing to try is get someone over there with a laptop and have them try it around the house and see what kind of signal they are getting. That will eliminate or confirm your WMP54G as the problem. Finally, try a 3rd party firmware upgrade for your router. Google DD-WRT.

Other Laptops are getting the same thing. I can't use DD-WRT right now as if anything were to happen, there are people around the house who really need the internet connection. And the router is already set to its original settings. Is my router just screwed? Because originally when i bought the router, it only had WEP security which didnt work properly anyway. When i upgraded the firmware, then it had WPA but no connectivity.

don't blame the WMP54G. It's a tried and true wireless adapter. Have one myself. The blame more than likely goes to the router. See if there's a firmware update for the router and do that. If not, like someone else said, go with dd-wrt if it's compatible. You may just have to wait till everyone's off their computers and then go ahead with it.

The router firmware is updated to the latest version. Will try DD-WRT soon.

EDIT: I just check the DD-WRT website and to my horror, it does not support my router! It states that it is not possible - because of technical issues router support is not possible. No support for the BEFW11S4 v4! Dammit... Looks like its a new router for me.

LOL, I don't even buy a wireless router anymore before checking it in the DD-WRT router database.
