Linux alternative to Corel Painter?

5516 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  error10
I thought I could throw Painter up in a XP VM and I can. The problems start with trying to get the tablet to work, and I've yet to find a solution that's adequate. So, anyone know of a comparable program for this? Note: I do not mean Corel Draw.

I've used gimp before and it's lacking in comparison, probably because it's not meant to do the same thing.

There's a set of tablet PC patches for Gimp and Inkscape (the two big drawing programs). You'll have to use Fedora 12 if you want them, I don't think they're in the mainline packages yet.

Better than ever tablet support allows you to enjoy pressure-sensitive drawing out-of-the-box - no mucking with configuration files required!
  • Fedora 12's updated version of Inkscape includes the new pen presets tool which lets you choose from a selection of pens to draw with (including 'dip pen,' 'brush,' 'wiggly,' and 'marker') and also gives you the ability to create and save your own pen styles.
  • Gimp's brush dynamics tool allows you to control how the velocity and pressure of your tablet pen can effect the opacity, color, hardness, and size of brush strokes.
  • Cell writer handwriting recognition lets you input text without having to use a keyboard.
  • Xournal allows you to jot notes on, highlight, and sign PDF documents - no more print, sign, and re-scan. You can even take handwritten notes on digital notebook paper.
Taken from here.

No solution is going to be perfect except, perhaps, Corel Painter. I suggest you let them know you are a customer and you want them to release a version for Linux. This is how we got ATI and NVIDIA drivers, after all.

I'm not a customer yet, been using the free trial and enjoyed it.

But thanks for the info, I'll have to look into Fedora.

I haven't used it in quite a long time.

I know a cartoonist who's been using Linux exclusively for the past couple of years and draws all his comics in Inkscape. So it's definitely worth looking into.

Corel Painter is kind of unique; it does a few things even Photoshop doesn't, and those things are why people buy it, so I wouldn't be surprised if the GIMP doesn't do them either. That said, the GIMP is also open source, so anything with enough expressed interest will get implemented. Check here if you're interested in helping.
I remember some guy on BlenderNation showing his workflow for making concept art in Linux. He used:

Alchemy
MyPaint

and Gimp with these plugins:
gimp-for-painter
Gimp Paint Studio

Hopefully some of it is useful.

Time to snag me a copy of Fedora 12 then and try out those gimp plugins (I completely forgot about those) and the other apps.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. +rep
I shouldn't have to tell you this, but remember to get the 64-bit version. The links on the download page default to 32-bit.
