I am new to linux and am wondering if there is a way that I can get Fedora Core 6 or any other main stream linux distro to install on my portable USB hdd? I don't want to mess with my windows boot record because I don't want to have to reinstall windows if I stop using or change to a different linux. Any help would be great!! I really want to play with linux.

Firstoff, a live CD sounds perfact for you. (Can't save anything tho..) Look into knoppix, or a mainstream distro that has one. Basically, you boot off a cd into linux. Obviously, CD's are read only...

Also, you DONT need to reinstall windows if you switch to a different distro.. Grub will be automatically configured for you with most distros. (Will detect windows)
For that matter, if you quit linux, you can restore the windows boot loader.. I don't know how tho.. Search linux forums for that.. I DO know it's possible.

Sorry, but I have never installed ojnto USB anything before.. It's gotta be possible tho..

I got Kubuntu to install fine on my portable hdd but it just would load from it. I'm not sure why though. It would start to load, then it would just hang and not do anything. My laptop is capable of loading from USB because I have doe it with a jump drive before.
