Is it better to use the Digital Optical cable to connect my z5500 to my sound card or to use the regular Analog cable ? I'm using the digital optical cable right now, but some how the control front panel come with my card doesn't work anymore.

use the analog ones so you get true 5.1 from your card

Good questions, I've been going back and forth on the same question. Are you using the SPDIF output directly, or using DTS Connect or Dolby Digital Live?

To the more general question, I think it's a tossup; I prefer using the analog cables because it's a lot easier. For the purposes of sound quality, I think the analog cables and the digital cable is probably going to be indistinguishable (that's what I've heard with mine).

Either the head unit of the Z-5500 is going to be doing the digital-to-analog conversion, or the sound card is. My bet is still that the DAC on the sound card is going to be superior, so I'm fine having the X-Fi do the conversion regardless of what the source is -- Dolby Digital movie, audio, computer game, etc.

I'm using the SPDIF output directly. I don't notice any different going from the analog to digital tho.

if you game alot you will. you will lose your deticated center channel sound by going optical
To answer your first question, I think you lose functionality on the sound card since it's no longer doing any processing, it's just passing audio signals right to the speakers. This is fine if you're listening to something like a DVD with a DTS track, but otherwise you might want the functionality of the card. I use the analog cables since you get both true digital 5.1 (which the sound card handles) and whatever else you're listening to without losing the card's options. Plus there's a little bit of an annoying delay when you use the SPDIF directly and a sound plays.
Also, don't worry, I bought a digital cable as well. I leave both that and the analog cables plugged in, but rarely select the digital out.

That's true. there's a little bit of a delay everytime i open up a game, or a application. I'm going to return the optical cable and use the analog cable. Thanks for your helps, gentlemen.

No problemo, enjoy. They're great speakers.
another question, when you use the analog cable, what input effect do you set on your z5500 ?

You should use direct 6 channel. Unless you want surround expand for 2 channel sources like music, then it's all down to your choice.

Yep, and I usually just keep it on 6 channel direct. I'm not really a fan of the results when stereo sources are upmixed by either the HU of the 5500s or the X-Fi.

btw, great signature re: glossy displays.

Yeah, I only use it if I plug my zune into it, but so far I haven't heard a better upmix method than foobar's channel mixer. But the one on the z5500 is fairly decent if you use the dolby pro logic.

And yeah, matte laptops FTW.
