Looking at some AMD Stuff...

I'm really torn between the 720BE X3 or a 940 BE X4.

What's the chances that the X3 is unlockable to a quad, and has anyone had any issues unlocking it?

Also is the Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H a good motherboard? Does it have any issues right now?

I'm wanting to play around with something more than dual core, and I want to go back to AMD for a while to play around with the fun overclocking.

I'm also wondering how likely it is for the Phenom II to hit 4ghz, as my current e8400 runs at 4ghz no problems, and I'd hate to lose a bit of performance.

So which upgrade would be better, an AM3 X3, or an AM2+ X4?

The 720s fourth cores are all locked, many are locked because the fourth core does not function, which allows amd to sell the other three cores as a perfectly good processor. While it is possible to unlock the fourth core, the fourth core is not guaranteed to function, nor is it even guaranteed to unlock. I would got for the Phenom II 940 or wait a little bit for the Phenom II 945 (AM3, DDR3) or even the 990 (3.5ghz at stock!). Check out this list of upcoming phenom II's, if nothing else, its very interesting:

Yes that is a good motherboard, pretty much any 790 chipset will oc very well with the phenom II's. If you are a getting a PhII, any 790gx or 790fx will do, unless it has horrible newegg ratings or something. Although i would reccomend biostar, as they come with an excellent overclocking tool in the bios.

When are the Phenom II 945's coming out?

Check the link i posted, all release dates (they arent totally specific) are on there.
The 925 comes out this month supposedly, but it's got a lower clockspeed anyway.

I'm really thinking about a 940 BE because DDR3 isn't mainstream, and by the time I upgrade (sometime next january maybe?) ddr3 will hopefully be at ddr2 prices.

Even if the 710/720 doesnt unlock stable its still a great gaming CPU. For the price you really cant beat it. Especially right now with the combo deals newegg has going on.

Seems like the majority of things im reading about the 7x0 is that people are successfully unlocking them very often, though stability is hit and miss.

I went right ahead and bought a combo, what you see in my sig rig is my new system.

I'd rather not chance it, my luck I'd get a botched chip or something, I already have bad enough luck with getting good batch numbers

Yeah I hope it's a decent upgrade from a 4ghz e8400.

amd isn't releasing 9x0 series anymore, they will be shifting to the 9x5 series. the phenom II x4 955 has been rumored to release april 6th with a 3.2ghz clockspeed.
