I've probably spent the past week looking off and on for the best deal I can get on a low-mid range laptop. The sweet spot seems to be in the $650-800 range, the only trouble is the selection is really limited.

The laptop is going to be used as a desktop replacement when I am away from home, single thread gaming (Everquest mostly), DVD playback, video chat with family over skype, and general surfing and such.

This is what I've narrowed it down to -
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AS7741G-7017-17-3-Inch-Laptop-Black/dp/B003ZUXX1K/ref=sr_1_17?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1295098808&sr=1-17]Amazon.com: Acer AS7741G-7017 17.3-Inch Laptop ( Black): Computer & Accessories[/URL]

For $650 I get an i5-460M with a Radeon Mobility 5650 and a 17" LED backlit LCD.

I was looking at the i3's due to the single thread gaming, and really don't need a quad core, or hyper threading, but noticed that the i3's end up coming with a lower quality dedicated card for the most part. That coupled with, I'm not sure if it would be worth stepping down to an i3. Everquest processes a good bit of the graphics with CPU power, so I was a bit reluctant to skimp on the CPU.

I used to deal with Acer laptops back in the early-mid 2000's, and they seemed to be fine from a system builder perspective, we didn't seem to have an overly high number of returns when compared to our retail fujitsu's and OEM compals.

Anyhow, I was hard pressed to find a better deal with comparable hardware. Does anyone have any experience with this laptop by chance and have any input on it?

OP id say go with the one you have picked out, this one that i quoted is really not worth it for $20 less considering the one you picked out has a 500GB hard drive 4gb of DDR3 (one above only has ddr2) and an i5 dual core over a core 2 duo and you have ATI radeon 5650 with 1GB DDR3

Yeah, I had really mulled that system over as well. The problem is, Everquest doesn't utilize the GPU as much as I had thought. I was running a 5770 and upgraded to a GTX 470 in my desktop PC and saw virtually no performance gains. If I were playing more GPU intensive games, I think the Asus would be a bit more tempting.

For other things such as multi-tasking, and multimedia, the Acer should be a better performer, no?

I got my AS7741G-7017 today from Amazon. No problems at all with the laptop. In fact there was a nice surprise. The i5 460M turned out to be an i5 480M
