I'm assuming your dad isn't going to be big into gaming or music?

I've heard that Turtle Beach makes decent stuff. This one is right around the price range Turtle Bearch Ear Force Gaming Headset

They used to be the go-to name in high quality sound cards for a while (or so I remember, and I'm likely dating myself with that statement).

Honestly, I'd just look at Amazon or Walmart, or get him to alter his requirements slightly and get something like the Superlux HD668B and a cheap clip-on mic. Sound will be infinitely better than any headset in that price range.

Hell...if he's desperate, I'll sell him an old Fatal1ty headset I have, provided I can find the detachable mic

These are my cheap ones I got from Walmart

They are not that bad. The sound is just as good as my nice cordless head set I use on my main rig and the mic works well too. My two and five year old kids use them and they haven't broken yet and not for lack of effort by my kids. If I put them on my head they are still comfortable as well. Honestly if I wanted a wired headset I don't think I use anything but these unless I went audiophile and started noticing things like subtle differences in bass.
