Looking for custom firmware.

My family says that they never have any problems with our linksys router when I'm off at school, and all they do is get online and browse or play flash games. Nothing that would really challenge the router at all.

But when I'm here, I'm usually downloading something or playing an online game where I'm connected to several other people, not to mention I'm on my messengers.

We've got a LINKSYS WRT54G router, ver6, and I've heard stories about the firmware being outstandingly bad and dropping connections in situations such as mine. It's becoming unbearable and the entire family is getting annoyed whenever we all get kicked off.

Since my router is ver6, I can't use Tomato, as it stops working after Ver5.

Can anybody recommend, or is there any, custom firmware that I can use for this router that doesn't suck as much as the one that comes with the router itself?

there are couple of them but you have make sure your router is compatible with them, DD-WRT, Tomato, open-wrt. I personally use DD-WRT and it works great.
Do you ever put a lot of stress on it? Like, multiple connections, gaming, downloading, etc?
Follow these instructions: http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Ver...er_Information

Since we can't link to all the tools correctly now, follow those instructions and do what it says exactly. If you screw it up, then you may end up bricking your router.

Did all of it, was in the router, but my internet wasn't working, wired or wireless.

So I started to change things to my liking before I tackled that issue, and one of those things was changing the IP to access it to 192.168.2.1 (opposed to 1.1, which my modem uses)

Now I can't access anything.

1) Download all materials needed
2) Unhook Modem
3) Flash Firmware
4) Setup Configuration (correctly)
5) Plug modem back in
6) Call ISP to see if you need to inform them of any changes.
I can't get into the router at all. I had DD-WRT on there but the internet wasn't working. I changed the IP of it and now I can't get into the router at all, even if I wanted to flash it again.

I'm considering ordering a WRT54GL so I can use tomato on it.
Do a 30-30-30 reset

Hold the button on the back of the router for thirty seconds, then unplug the router while still holding the button down for thirty seconds, then plug it in while still holding the button down for thirty seconds.
Alright, that worked. I can get back into the router and I reset it to factory defaults for good, probably redundant, measure.

I can detect the wireless signal but I still get no internet. Do I have to change something or activate something?

Been looking at their site for answers, but nothing is helping so far.

Edit:

Updated to latest firmware
Turned off PC and Router firewalls
Am experiencing no apparent packet loss

Still no "internet"

Any ideas? Maybe something that isn't router related?

Try power cycling your modem, if that doesn't work, make sure that under setup, that everything is set to the type of connection you have.

Finally, just call your ISP if that doesn't work.
Well, it was a fun attempt and a good learning experience, but I can't get it to work. I've ordered a WRT54GL in hopes that it will perform better. I don't have any hopes for the firmware that comes with it, so I'm sure I'll be switching to Tomato right off the bat.

Now, I hope somebody sees this question, but I need the answer and I feel like a fool for asking it.

When I moved back to this house, I was informed that "we never had any problems when your computer wasn't hooked up" so I left my main machine (sig) unhooked for a few days and did everything on my netbook.

So last night I hooked up my gaming PC and played a little bioshock and did pretty unstressful things. Browsed the internet, played Bioshock from Steam, got on AIM and MSN and nothing else.

Would that have been enough to send that stock firmware'd WRT54G over the edge and start disconnecting? It didn't while I was doing anything, but that night, they woke me up complaining about it. My PC was off.

There's no way my wireless card could have been doing ANYTHING with the PC -OFF- right? Could the router have been going overboard from what I was doing earlier in addition to what they were doing right then?
