Looking for Portable Game Emulators?

2032 Views 29 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Greensystemsgo
I've been looking at the following:
  • Nintendo DS
  • PSP
  • Dingoo
  • GP2X Wiz
I want a system that can play the following via emulator:
  • NES
  • SNES
  • GBA
  • GBC
  • PSX
  • Nintendo 64
  • etc
[at acceptable framerates]

The PSP looks to be the most promising but (as far I know) Nintendo 64 doesn't run with acceptable framerates (but PSX games can run, right?)

Anyone experienced in this area? Thanks.

I have a PSP and here's what I remember from emulation:

-NES games perfectly
-most SNES games run great with minor tweaking
-PSX games run really good
-N64, I think only Mario 64 is "playable"
-For GBC I think the emulator is alright but as for GBA I don't think it's full speed yet

My brother had a DS and he runs NES and SNES games great. I'm pretty sure there is a good GBC/GBA emulator for it also. I don't think there is an emulator for the rest of the consoles though (DS is pretty weak).

I don't really know about Dingoo but my suggestion is to go with PSP over DS for emulation.

Well, thing is, I already have a DS, I'd be willing to sell it and buy a PSP if it meant playing PSX and Nintendo 64 games.
Another one I've found is the GP2X Wiz....
So many choices!!!

The PSP looks to be the best option, is it possible to run homebrew on the 3000?

GP2X Wiz looks promising. If they weren't so expensive I'd pick one up.

I believe you can only unlock homebrew on the 3000 with a special Pandora Battery. As for the 1000, you can unlock it using only software. What I used for my 2000 is the battery hard mod to flash it to a CFW. It's a pretty simple mod and you can turn it back into a battery easily when you are done.

Only really old versions of the 1000 can be flashed without a pandora battery.

Well the 2000 can be flashed using by modding the battery that comes with it (into a homemade pandora) and a MagicGate enabled memory stick. I think you can do the same with the more recent 1000.

3000's can run chichen r2 and cfw that only loads to rom, not the flash so if you pull battery for it dies/crashes then you will have to redo chichen.

majority of 2000's can be hacked either using chichen, pandora, or a variety of game exploits.

ALL 1000's can be hacked using chichne, pandora, or a variety of game exploits.

majority of n64 games run awesome. majority of psx games as well.

For all psp stuff, check out pspmod.com. However i'd be more then willing to help you out - im no pro but have done ~20 psp cfw jobs - and lately computer customers are making psp cfw requests hahaha.

feel free to IM me.

Take the PSP. N64 emulation on it is improving rapidly as well and PS1 games run fullspeed unglitched on the PSP since it has the same CPU as the PS1 so really they are being run natively.
Ok I'll choose PSP then.

Do you foresee the Nintendo 64 Emulator getting perfect FPS within its lifetime?

Will there be any difference if I get the 2000 over the 3000? (In terms of performance of emulators?)

I'll look around for a cheap 2000, know of anyone that wants to trade for a DS with an R4?

Nobody suggested the Pandora?

http://openpandora.org/

That's all you'll need once they go into mass production

Given that even the N64 emulator for PC still has problems I very much doubt the PSP will have a near perfect N64 within it's lifetime.

I think the only difference between the 2000 and 3000 is that the 3000 has a newer screen, an integrated microphone and slight appearance differences. The hardware is still the same. Both the 2000 and 3000 have 64MB of ram while the 1000 only has 32MB of ram.

Well, When I say near-perfect, I mean for popular games (like Zelda 64, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox, etc.
Do you think those will ever be playable?

[Also] Are PSP Backups able to play on it? I'd assume so..
I've also seen tutorials that turn PS1 disks (FF8, FF9, FF Origins, etc.) into PSP games, will this generally work on any PS1 game?

I'm going to (hopefully?) get it for Christmas, so I can't really wait for a Pandora. So the PSP 2000 would be the way to go eh?

There is a good possibility that the games you listed will work at a good FPS since these are the games people tend to want to play the most, hence the developers will likely focus on making these games run better.

Yes, both PSP and PS1 backups (with the correct popsloader version) will work.

I highly suggest you go with the 2000 or 3000 because the ram will definitely help with homebrew and emulation. The 3000 might have a better screen but there have been reports of interlacing and tearing problems. I personally would go with the 2000 if you can find it for cheap.

Do you happen to know of any good places that sell PSP 2000s but also give which firmware is on them, and if they're "hackable"?

All PSP 2000 are hackable via pandora battery or hard mod regardless of the firmware since it allows you to install any firmware version you want (except PSP 1000-only firmware). Here's a link for new and used PSP-2000s at pretty good prices.

where are you getting your info? the TA-088v3 motherboard that is in the psp 2000 is not hackable. just like the 3000, it can run chichen however cannot have anything written to the flash. Below i've supplied a nice table showing which psp's are hackable (if they are in the hackable list then a pandora can be used to hack them), and the Pandora column is showing which psp's can soft mod a battery into Pandora mode.

"...the new motherboards [TA-088v3] will only boot an ipl that is signed by sony.
Pandora / DDC are unsigned so that renders them ... useless.
I dont see a work round for a bit yet." source

Are you sure *any* model of the 2000 can be used with the Pandora Battery?
I was talking with Greensystemsgo and he said there was a specific model that was *unhackable* in the 2000 series...

I was looking at this...
http://www.consolespot.net/forums/ps...dentifier.html

Does the Pandora Battery work on any 2000 non-TA-088v3 motherboard regardless of Firmware version?
You might be right. I have hacked three or four PSP 2000 this way and thought it could be applied to all of them. Sorry for the wrong info

I have all those emulators on my PSP at the moment, the latest version too.
All emulators run flawless except for the N64 emulator (daedalusx64).

  • NES -perfect, now even have a rewind option
    Thank you NesterJ
  • SNES - OC the PSP to 333MHz and you have yourself a home sitter for hours to come.
  • GBA With the right BIOS for the gpSP will run without slowdowns.
  • GBC RIN's GBC emulator is the best there is, looks and performs as the NesterJ
  • PSX - inbuilt support for CFW firmwares.
  • Nintendo 64 - DaedalusX64 have the most important settings for it to run, but it's still hard to encode and decode the games.
  • etc -> DGEN/psphugo/DSONPSP
  • DGEN - complete Sega Genesis/MS emulator that is the spitting image of the PC version of the DGEN series.
  • psphugo - Sadly I only have one game on it and it runs flawless
  • DSONPSP - I don't have a BIOS for this emu, and I don't have any friends that I know have a DS so though luck for me, but it still looks like a solid one.
