Looking to upgrade my GPU

1081 Views 26 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Malaziel
I would like to hear some advice from the experts.
I have a P4 2.4GHz 478socket, 512MB RAM (of which I don't know the specs) and an old NVidia GPU GForce with 64MB RAM (@200MHz IIRC).
I am looking to replace my GPU and I would like to stay with NVidia because it has been proved robust. I am not a super-gamer neither I use my PC for super dupper entertainment. I am looking for something cheap that will offer a great improvement to my current setup. It would be nice to enjoy some games without the quality compromises I currently have and watch a movie without freezing.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Edit: The Mobo is an ASUS P4P800S-X

Thanks for the replies all of you.
The store I buy from is http://www.microdirect.co.uk
so if you could check it and see what you could find in there.

I am not disappointed by my current GPU which is 5 years old with almost 24/7 use. So you can see that I am not looking for cutting edge stuff. It is just missing that kick...

Thank you for making the effort. I have two questions if you don't mind.
1) What is the difference between Leadtek and GeForce? Is it something I should worry about?
2) Is the difference between the 5500 and the 6600gt that much to justify almost 3 times higher price?

Thanks a lot guys that is very helpful.
For those of you with the 6600GT how far it can be overclocked?
I mean is the limit even higher or is it from stock as far as it goes?
What resolutions should I be able to run in games with that and my current setup?
