Low FPS in Black Ops

5243 Views 28 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  eternal7trance
I dunno what it is but no matter what drivers I use on my computer, I'm always getting like 30-60 avg fps in Black Ops. Sometimes it does this laggy mouse thing and my aiming gets all screwy. Most other games play pretty well like BFBC2 and Metro 2033. Even Dragon Age 2 plays better.

But I see on review websites that this card is supposed to be averaging 100+ fps. I copied the settings they used and I'm not even close. Is it because I'm using two monitors?

Edit: I tried this with vsync on and off btw.

Try installing the latest DirectX End-User Runtime

Try disabling the 2nd monitor and playing it.
I'll try these things out tonight. Even Nvidia says I should be around 92 avg FPS with everything cranked. I can't even hit that with 4x AA instead of the 16x AA that they show.
Also try deleting the Config_mp file in your game directory. It changes all the game and console settings back to default, so you will have to reconfigure your controls and graphics when you turn the game back on.
Nah it still runs like crap, I even tried using different drivers. It's like 30-50 fps and the mouse gets so laggy in the game.
thats pretty wierd... my computer runs it maxed and hardly ever hitches. Try turning off antivirus programs and such. If it still really runs poorly you can make a dual boot with XP with only black ops installed. If that doesnt work then you might want to just buy TF2 lol
How is your CPU and GPU usage in BlackOps? Is it changing dramatically when you get lag spikes?
Nah it's not really a lag spike. It's just overall low fps. The usage shows 99% on my gpu, and the cpu shows 30-40% as always.

Lately it's been hovering around 30-50fps depending on what's going on. I know a lot of people with the same settings that have lower cards and get way higher.
well black ops runs mostly on cpu power not gpu, try turning other things off while playing because im gettin 80-150fps with maxed settings
i blame the 2 monitors dont people sometimes have trouble with 2?
I tried using just one monitor but I ran in to the same problem. Crispy, what resolution are you playing at? I'm playing at 1920x1080.

yea i play 1920x1080
Buy a Killer 2100 NIC and you'll get much better FPS and smooth gameplay.

It only costs 89.99$ Instead of upgrading ur entire system.

The card also bypass Windows networking stack (junk API) and moves network computation from CPU to NPU (network processing unit inside Killer 2100), so your game gets all the attention from your CPU.

Let me know how it works for you

It depends, what resolution are you using, If you are using a high resolution of atlest 1680x1080 then you should completly disable Anti-Aliasing, because Anti-aliasing is basically fake resolution, AA should only be at x16 when you are playing on a low resolution such as 1280x768 or 1360x768, even then you should put the AA at only x8.

Blops can disagree with all sorts of things in your computer, No idea if its been fixed with patches etc as I haven't touched the game since the end of the November when it became obvious they were not going to fix it.

But one of the problems it had was randomly deciding to set the config up as though you have 2 gpus when you only have 1 and vice versa but also limiting you to 2 cores on your cpu, check through the config files and check those settings.

Also certain sound cards just make it cry in the corner. check yours against ones with known issues.

End of the day though cheapest upgrade path available to fix this POS console port is to buy an xbox :'(

You're right, I changed it to 0AA and there's hardly any difference in the graphics at 1920x1080. Everything is just as clear and I can see far away just fine. I have everything else cranked and now it caps out and stays at 60fps. I have vertical sync on so this is totally fine. +rep

Don't be an idiot. The setting multi_gpu "1" is default DOES NOT affect non-SLI/CF users. Please read the user manual and you'll realise that that setting looks for whether a 2nd GPU is installed in SLI/CF, if it isn't, the game does NOTHING. So the Dev's were right at setting it to "1".

Secondly, seta r_multithreaded_device "1" - This will create a D3D device with the multithreaded flag. According to the developers, this is mainly a debugging option and doesn't enhance performance.

Stop reading internet BS and stop spreading misinformation.
You know, I have this exact same problem and I have just dealt with it all this time thinking it was just the game, but now that others are having this issue, and even with an i7, I'm suspicious...
