Macro and wide angle lenses for an Olympus

237 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  GoneTomorrow
Can anyone recommend good macro and wide angle lenses for an Olympus e510? My wife only has the regular lens the camera comes with and wants to explore macro photography. The wide angle lens would probably be used inside or for different photograpic effects.

Thanks!

Edit: I saw these on eBay and have never seen anything like it before. Are they any good?

Yikes! Expensive! Those lenses alone cost the same amount as the camera with the standard lens!

Thanks for the links. Any cheaper solutions out there?
You may find cheaper with brands like Sigma and Tamron.

Olympus just released a 9-18mm lens, and it's pretty decent and cheaper:

Still quite a bit though. Expect to pay a lot for a wide angle lens.

And the macro adapters suck, don't waste your time. Lots of chromatic aberration among other issues. Consider a dedicated macro lens, Olympus has a couple of excellent ones:

Olympus 35mm f/3.5 Zuiko Digital Macro
Olympus 50mm f/2 Zuiko Digital Macro

Thanks for the info about the macro adaptors. We won't waste our time with them.

Didn't realize that lenses were typically so expensive...I worked at a camera shop about 15 years ago and most of the autofocus lenses were in the $300 range. At least that's what I remember...but I could just be remembering wrong.

Anyway, thanks for the help. Looks like we'll need to save up a little more to take the plunge on new lenses.

Well that was 15 years ago.
I'd say that's on par with today's prices. And those old Four Thirds lenses will still work, so if you find some on eBay, go for it and see what you think. Modern lenses for DSLRs are more expensive because the quality of the materials for the glass and body is better, there are more elements, and there are often new technologies like image stabilization and hyper-sonic AF motors.
