The best part of Mafia 2 to me was the storyline. It had me hooked from beginning to end, and I never found myself bored or wishing I could skip certain parts. I don't know if I could say that I really identify well with the lead, but it is definitely easy to form a connection as you progress through the game.
Graphics and gameplay are pretty average in my opinion. It is your standard 3rd person FPS where you can hide behind cover and just lay waste to an entire room of baddies before progressing forward. It isn't anything revolutionary, but it definitely works. The graphics are decent as well if your system can handle all the detail settings.
For $10 I think it is definitely worth a pickup.

For 10 bucks yes. I'd spend $20 tops on it. The story is amazing but way too short to be worth more than $20. Plus you can't technically free roam. And by technically I mean you literally do not have the option of free roaming in between missions. I mean, you can start a mission and then just not go to the next objective. But there's really never a point in which you can just have fun and free roam.

honestly, its only plus is graphics. the storyline is horrid especially compared to the first. horrid ending that left me angry and wanting to rage; even on the my new (at the time) monitor.

Of course, the free roam in all the GTAs is what IMO actually makes the games. I've had so much fun just messing around in every GTA. I was really upset when I found out I couldn't free roam without doing it in between missions in Mafia 2.
Maybe there's a mod or something out there enabling it, not sure.

Demo was great, game loves quad cores. smooth as butter. gonna get it and use that freemode mod.

I'd buy it for $10. I thought it was a really fun and engaging storyline, and I definitely stayed interested in playing through the game to find out "what happens next."
As others have said, though, it's not really the open world, sandbox style game you might be expecting. There's a lot of "drive here, watch a cut scene, drive here, watch a cut scene," and since the content between waypoints isn't very fleshed out, it can get tedious.
