okay, so might seem stupid as I am only out 2.55GB for this install, but I want to strip anything I don't need from my Ubuntu 10 install. first, yes I know 12 is out there, but I prefer this interface as I am used to it. If there is a way to install the stock ubuntu 10 interface on 12, then I will move up happily.

Okay, so first off, I ran

Code:

Code:
dpkg --get-selections
. Fine enough, but what can I get rid of and what do I need to keep it functional?

the list from the above code is
Code:

Code:

I have a feeling the list is longer, as when fully scrolled up, I don't see the command to get the list. :/ but that is what I can see. (not to mention the alphabet don't start with L). But like said, what is necessary, and what can I get rid of?

what you need to do is decide what you need first.

do you need and office suite, openoffice
more then one media player totem, rhythmbox, etc....
x org drivers for s3, savage, ati, sis, cirrus nouveau etc....
do you need python (maybe) and all those modules?
extra fonts and wallpapers (artwork)
kernel headers and source?
for a complete list send the results of dpkg --get-selections to a file and look through it.

Code:

Code:
dpkg --get-selections > list_of_installed_files
research what you have and decide if you need it

Well, open office is removed, at least as far as I could (using software center to remove it). The only processing software I use is gedit and abiword. They do what I need just fine. so I can remove any others installed.

drivers, all I need is the HD4250 driver. The rest are just space taken unless the system somehow uses them on my chip.

I use rhythmbox only for now, so all others can go. Really it can go to until I can get a USB sound chip to replace the faulty chip in this laptop.

What do fonts do? are they necessary for system function? The backgrounds are not really necessary except for the picture that it is set to.

and that bit of code there? does the > tell it where to send the list? Like if I told it "... > /home/wolfe/documents/listofprograms" then it would make a file called listofprograms with the data in my documents folder? Or am I misreading it?

You're doing this backwards, you should start off with a minimal distro and build it up.

So either start with Debian, or Lubuntu (it's not a minimal distro, but it has left cruft than regular Ubuntu)

I am doing it the way i am doing it (not to be rude, as that probably sounds like it). I love teh system as it comes out of the box. Just not a lot of teh extra crap that I never use, like openoffice, brazaro (I don't have a CD drive, so can't use it anyway), or drivers for cards I don't have.

If I started from Debian or lubuntu, then I loose the only reason I have ubuntu 10 on the system. the Ubuntu interface. Don't get me wrong, cinnamon, gnome3, and teh like are fine. but they just don't fit me like this does. All I want to do is remove what I don't have a use for while keeping the system as is and functional.

But the "Ubuntu interface" can easily be installed on Debian or Lubuntu. The point of the "out of the box" distros is they come with everything pre-installed to save users the trouble having to find apps and alter the system. But if you're going to find packages you don't want then remove them anyway (and given the number of packages you're looking to remove), then it's going to be easier to install a minimal distro and install the Unity (the Ubuntu desktop) - as that's the point of the minimal distros (ie you start with the basics and install whatever desktop environment you want on top).

I mean, by all means you can carry on this way if you want; it's your computer and your free time. But having gone down this approach myself in the past, I find it much quicker to build a system up rather than trying to tear one apart. It's also less risky as no chance of accidentally uninstalling a critical package.

Unity is not the interface. I am still on 10. unity is just horrible (to me. I am entitled to my opinion after all).

Let me restate what I am trying to do. 2.5GB disk usage is fine. I could not get that with windows XP if I tried. Only really looking to remove some things that will not be used and instead replace them with what I will use. Like why would I need 2 office apps? Especially since all I do with them is type up reports. abiword does it better for me. So remove openoffice. Or why have multiple audio programs? rhythmbox can handle my AAC and MP3 needs, so remove the others. No need for multiple things to handle the same stuff. Or why have drivers installed for different GPUs. I will never have anything other than the HD4250, it is a laptop after all (a low end one at that). So remove the unneeded ones. I'm sure there is a lot more redundancy in the system too.
If I started from say debian net and moved up, then it would end up with 10 million more questions, weeks resolving dependencies, trying to find this exact window manager, then setting it up, likely driver issues, and more issues that I likely would never find an answer to and still end back at ubuntu 10.
Guess what I am saying is, I want to trim the system, not create a new one.

Well whatever desktop environment you like, it can be installed on other distros.

You may find that some media players like mplayer and VLC will be dependencies for other applications as they'll use those libraries - or even the command line versions of those applications - as their back-end player.

Drivers would be the same and the window manager wouldn't matter as that would just be the dependency of whatever desktop environment you're running (and it sounds like you already know that much).

But i take your point

This. This so much.

This is a good case of that backwards Windows thinking of what you get is what you get. That isn't the choice with Linux. Anything from one Linux distro can be installed on another distro or version.

The " Ubuntu interface " you're talking ( before unity ) about is Gnome 2 or rather these days called " Mate ". And it's as simple as can be to install it.

I also agree you're going backwards, you should build up, not down. Debian by default right now, still uses the Gnome 2 interface as well, so it would make your life easy. Although you'll still have to remove some things from the desktop environment, as they come as groups with some of these programs built in, although some distro's like Arch have groups packaged with just what you need to get the DE up and running.

I would honestly just insist on installing Mate, then you can update your machine as much as you like and never worry about losing the Gnome 2 interface.

Like they said, building up from a minimal distro will work out better for you. You can find tutorials and information for just about everything.

If you're looking for what to uninstall:

It is the same. Just not themed.

But I guess if you don't want help, then this link or even this link is useless to you, and giving you the name of the theme " Ambiance " wouldn't help any.

I didn't see your laptop on there, my apologies. I gave you advice pertaining to your current setup after I agreed with the others about building up. Most of my post was pertaining to what you could remove. If you're going to be rude, you can take your questions elsewhere.

I'm really not sure what you're looking for. You asked how to slim down your install and I feel your question was answered by everyone here.

Also, in regards to Gnome2, it all depends on your theme as Shrak said... Just google Gnome 2 themes.

Cute; people try to provide an alternative to building down which can be cumbersome. Building up is exactly what you want, but you are being arrogant toward those trying to lead the way. Let me depict the packages in those two screenshots, in text form for you:
Base (Linux kernel, and required packages for boot and devices)
X11, Gnome2(Mate)

Packages not in the first screenshot that are in the second:
Conky
Chrome
Gnome2-theme-ambiance

3 packages (1 potentially not a package depending on your distro, but readily available from gnome-look or otherwise) make up the difference between those two setups, graphically. So, let's see "apt-get purge --remove {list of ~200 packages}" vs "apt-get install {3 packages}" Which is more simple to you? Which makes more sense? I used to do exactly what you are now. I was misinformed and used to doing things the "Windows way" I installed Ubuntu and it came with software I didn't use so I removed the software I didn't like and put what I did instead. Now I do things the Linux way - I start as simple as I can and install just what I want. Instead of having ~1200 packages on first boot I have around 300, and instead of cutting down 600 packages or more and reinstalling 100-150 alternatives, I simply install 400 packages that I want (Most of which are dependencies I really only uninstall ~100 packages and their dependencies and reinstall 10-20 with their dependencies)
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make a horse drink.

Oh, I'm sorry I missed the icon theme, I don't know it off the top of my head, but it makes it 4 packages.

Oh hey look, a screenshot of someone running modern Mate (Gnome2) with the Ambiance theme (the "Ubuntu interface" as you call it)

Yes, I realize this post is quite rude, but you've chosen to badger and belittle people offering a helping hand. I've chosen to return the favor, while still trying to be helpful.

So you ask for advice, then when multiple people tell you to do the same thing, you refuse to listen?

Either do it the way EVERYONE has suggested (which is the best way) or start googling/ apt-cache search(ing) to see what they all do and remove them.
And if you decide to listen and build up, you can use the Ubuntu minimal CD instead of debian if your prefer.

I even listed the basic things he could remove! Transmission, Nvidia & intel graphic drivers, OpenOffice

As has been stated multiple times, you're going backwards. It's not even open for debate, so stop trying to argue.

If you don't want good advice and just need to use apt-get remove and dpkg --purge on a list of packages where only you can tell if you want or not, what did you need to make a thread for????

If you go forward that way, given your lack of experience, you're going to end up removing something and one day you'll have a strange or broken system. Don't expect anyone to read through that massive list and check off yes or no for you. So, as was correctly said, the only sensible way to get a minimal install with what you need on top, is to start with a minimal install and add what you need on top.

I think a lot of us have learned this the hard way, sounds like you need to as well.
