Making a 250mm fan slot on a CM690

Hi, i am thinking about instead of having 2 120-140MM fan slots on the side, i would just have a big 250mm fan particularly this one http://www.crazypc.com/products/250mm_fan-5752.html. Anyone know a video guide on how to do it? Also would it be better to have a big fan instead of 2 smaller fans?

It would be quieter and more cooling depending on the 2 fans you would use. But quieter at least. The only probem is you have to make sure that your fan and cpu heatsink will fit inside the case.

Items needed:
1.Dremel + Cutting disk
2.Goggles
3.Bravery
4.Masking tape
5.Drill (Or drill bit add on to dremel)

Procedures:
1. Put a large amount of tape around the area you're going to be cutting.
2. Using a marker, trace the circle in which the fan will be, and the fan holes.
3. Put on the cutting disk, goggles, and get to it! Take it slow at first

4. Drill out the holes for the screws
5. Clean off the panel, and mount the fan.

Ta-da!

I've heard bad things about big side panel fans. Very noisy and very easy to break the fins.

I think it would be better and MUCH EASIER to just get 2 smaller fans.

The Temps are brought down considerably though. I added the 250mm to my side panel and it brought my temps down 5~7 degrees C on my cpu and gpu. It should be a decent improvement over 2 120's I would guess.
Waverider: I just realized that, I am planning on buying a xiggy dark knight 120mm heatsink. Do you know if i can fit that fan in there with that?

Luckily i have a dremel and i cut out the fan grill on the back of the motherboard tray so my 80mm fan can exhaust better.
well here is how my 250's hole turned out, http://www.overclock.net/case-mod-wo...ml#post5544583

I cut mine with a coping saw, which i prefer over a dremel, and if you dont have a dremel may actually be cheaper, but only if you get lucky and find a nice big one at your hardware store. Also be sure to get your self a big half circle file to clean up the cut afterwards. Some 220 grit sand paper is good for deburring the inside edge. The dremel will work, but you will really need the file then since those silly discs only cut straight segments.

I can tell you from the 250mm fan I have, it really is pretty dissapointing performance wise tho. Its there for the wow factor more than anything, and I assure you it will work really well to that end. However airflow wise it probably moves about the equivalent of 1.5 average 120mm fans. And its not even that quiet. For the best performance i would say use 4 120mm fans. Those you can cut with a hole saw really easy, and you would get way better actual performance and probably even less sound if you undervolted or had them fan controlled.

OP, just make sure to give yourself some clearance from the CPU heatsink. I know the Thermaltake side panel 250mm fans bump up against the Xigmatek coolers.

It will probably be a tight fit :/. Look at the dimensions from the mobo tray to the side panel and subract 2 inches or so. If the Xig can fight in that distance than you are fine. If not get 2 120s -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233009 very quiet and moves a decent amount of air. Those will get the job done for you if the 250mm doesnt work out.

i see, yea cutting out the hole would be a pain and filing i know i will screw up at some point like filing too much and the fan doesnt fit properly. Ill just use the 2 120-140mm fan slots and get some high speed fans and put them on my controller. I might have to get another fan controller for all the fans. Would putting electrical tape on the edges of the fans that touch the case help quieten them down?
Reps added to everyone.

im looking for fans that move at least 90CFM or fans that move 75+cfm and are quiet. 120mm or 140mm my case fits both for every slot.
I'm sure it would work fine but idk how well exactly. Try the electrical tape and if the vibration is that bad just get the fan dampeners. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185059 or these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185060 perhaps. I have the 2nd ones and they are pretty loud but move a ton of air.

I dont think the vibration is really bad but i think it will help shut up my high speed yate loons.
Problem with those fans is that they are sleeve bearing which don't last long as i'd like it to.

Yeah than go for the loons they are great from what I hear.

yea they are great i have two of them but one makes like a buzzing or whine on max speed, strangely my other one that exhausts air right behind the heatsink is not loud at all just hear the air moving. I suppose ill get a bunch of the yate loons and use the electrical tape to stop any vibration. Thanks a lot for the help everyone i really appreciate it you guys are the best. Now i have to get another fan controller which means more wires.

it would work to a certain extent, but i would recommend something like this
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/34...r_Grommet.html

probably not worth what they sell it for individually, but try ebay for the same sorta thing. basically a rubber washer will work too, but the grommets are nicer. Both should be able to work fine with regular self threading fan screws. or you could use nuts and bolts to hold the fans in.
