Hi,

I just bought a new lcd, since the lcd on my laptop (running xp) is crapping out. The laptop's video card is an ati mobility radeon x600. The new monitor has (evidently by default) been made an extension to the right side of the lcd on the laptop (I can drag a window over to the new monitor, by sliding the window beyond the right edge of the laptop's lcd).

Under the circumstances, I of course want my new lcd as the primary (or exclusive, for that matter) monitor.
"Use this device as the primary monitor" is checked and greyed out on the display settings for the laptop's lcd. "Use this device as the primary monitor" is unchecked, and greyed out on the display settings for the new monitor.
How can I resolve this problem?

Thanks,

Does your laptop by any chance have one of those special keys they use to control the brightness of the screen, and maybe the volume?..its like a key beside ctrl , or alt (usually). Because theres that button that looks like a monitor with lines on each side. Try using that button and see if the lcd on the lappy turns off and only the other one turns on. thats how it works on my sisters Vaio

EDIT: Hey, can you tell us what laptop you have? maybe that can help us, help you

Thanks so much for the advice, Snip3rWarrior.

I tried what you advised, and it worked!

My laptop is a hp zd8000. The lcd is going out 4 months after the whopping year long warranty expired. I'll just let you imagine what I think of hp now.

Thanks again.

The way that I did this on my Thinkpad was to right click on the desktop and choose ATI Catalyst control centre and use the wizard to setup my display. In the wizard it is easy to set the external monitor as the primary device.
