Rather than looking at all the ways one can build a super-quiet PC, we decided to focus on the case and power supply. We'll take a fairly typical high-end system and put it into a good-quality enthusiast case, and then see if some case modifications can drop the decibel levels a bit. The idea is not to replace all the cooling with new equipment, but to see if sound dampening material, rubber grommets, and quieter power supplies really make a difference. In other words, this is about containing and reducing the noise made inside your case more than just a laundry list of quiet CPU coolers and the like. Perhaps we'll discover that the noise from a high-end CPU with a stock cooler, graphics card, and drives are just too much to overcome |
