I think i read somewhere that you can only have a 4gb SDHC card for nikon D40's. Is this true? Could i use a 16gb card for my nikon?

The biggest I've seen is 32GB cards, so you should be ok.
actually its SDXC or something that supports up to 2TB, SDHC maxes at 32GB..

also.. just because the "format/card" supports xx amount of space, doesnt mean the camera can recognize it or support it at all if its "over xxx space"

http://imaging.nikon.com/products/im.../d40/index.htm

says there "up to 4GB"

i would bet on either:

A: it sees the card, but limits to 4GB
B: it doesn't see the card at all..

I don't see how it could be SDHC and only support 4GB.

Could be that because the largest card on the market at release (2006) was 4GB, they said that was the max.

If it makes you feel any better, I use 8GB cards in my D60.

In RAW, ~800 with my D60. The D40 sensor is about 60% in MP as the D60, so you could probably get like 1300. A battery charge does about 450-650 shots depending on flash use.

some people have said that SDHC has worked for the D40.

my cousin told me it will work with a firmware update.

if its not compatible with SDHC, then max is 4GB SD. if SDHC can be used, then like 16-32GB.

Why would you want a card that big? That's really putting all your eggs into one basket. I've had cards go corrupt on me about 3 times in the last 3 years. Then again I use my gear every day for work. One thing I will never do is shoot a big event on a single card.

1/2 GB cards FTMFW.
