OK, this is ridiculous!

I am maxing 40fps on a GTX 470....on LOW!

Open to suggestions or is this f-ing normal?????

Your CPU is the bottleneck. GTA IV is a crappy port and requires a highly clocked quad core to run.

OC that little beast

At 4ghz, the game would run smoother.

And if you run high, the FPS won't be much lower. You have a clear CPU bottleneck.

But almost no one can max that game out. It's such a crappy port. Your rig would be better elsewhere

But if you require to play that, max it out, but lower the view distanse. Also OC that CPU by a lot. That will help...

try running on high, I bet your FPS will not be much lower = CPU bottleneck

Third on the CPU bottleneck. My Q6600 @ 3.6ghz didn't even run it completely smooth on all high. From what I can tell the i7's destroy this game.

Not really. It is still slow on an i7.

No it isn't. Not at all. I get over 64 fps in the benchmark with everything on max except traffic density, I set it to 60 instead of all the way up because it's ridiculous to drive around with anything higher than that. The game is buttery smooth for me at all times.

To the OP, you have a cpu bottleneck, overclock your processor to around 4 GHz and you should see a great improvement in your fps.

I don't see a 955 X4 being a bottleneck, unless the clock speeds are low, but even a stock 955 has decent clock speeds.
Plus, what did you expect from a GTX 470?

Its a darn nice GPU but its not that fast.

And the Q9's are still good quad cores but I have seen many benchmarks of the Q6's not doing so well in comparison to todays CPU's... even Phenom II's walk right by them.

Not to knock a Q6600 just saying.

Actually it is, I run GTA IV maxed on my sig rig and it runs >30FPS all the time. So does my mate with a stock i7 860 and a stock GTX 470.

2 things

1: The game is a REALLY REALLY REALLY crappy port and uses much more CPU power than it should. No modern processor can really max that out so well...

2: A GTX 470 is VERY fast. If the CPU bottleneck wasn't there, he would have max settings and everything running smoothly...

CPU bottlenecks become more obvious at lower details and resolutions, which is why you are up in a rage right now.

A GTX 260 can handle GTA IV adequately.

A GTX 470 can run the game at 3840 x 2160, for AA.

just adding my 2 cents:

my sig rig (cpu at 4G atm, gpu not OCed) gives fps between 24-50 on high, depends on what im doing (going to the beach and runing up and down ofcourse gives 60)

tried the trick with event logs yet?

Get an i7 @ 4.2ghz. My gta4 runs 50-80fps maxed out with anisotropic at 16x and draw distance to 70, every thing else Very high.

The GTX 470 is within the top 10 fastest gpu's....

Wow, I am not going to purchase another CPU just because crappy devs made a game for consoles, and then spent 10 minutes porting it to PC.

My CPU is good....

I think you guys are accidentally offending me, I spent a lot of time into this machine...

I don't know if it was the new updates that killed performance, but my i7 @ 4.0GHz and GTX 480 ran choppy in GTA4.
