I have a chance to get these for $15 off of my friend. I know it's no Sennheiser HD 555, but is it worth it for the price?

EDIT: Bumped this thread for a good reason. No longer $15, but I found one on craigslist for $35. Still a good deal over $45 Sennheiser HD 202's?

their worth about that yea. just get a pair of ksc75's their cheeper and they sound better.
i read some review saying they are pretty darn good. (not extreme good) for that price sure
A buddy of mine from work has a pair. He came into work one night blasting some metal so I had to put them on and have a listen. I was pretty impressed with the quality of sound he was getting from his ipod. I went out and bought the model up, the MDR-XD300. Decent sound, but not as portable as the XD200's as they've got a massive headband that looks pretty goofy. For $15, it's definitely worth the price of admission.
I have a friend that uses a pair of those for gaming. For $15 it's worth picking them up if you don't have a better alternative. They are a bit flimsy and the sound will be "ok" but realistically you won't find a huge improvement over them unless you double the price or more.
Bump

I forgot about this thread, but any more opinions? I'm either getting THESE or HD 202's. Need some more answers!
Snazzy! It depends how picky you are and how much you value bass/low-end response. Those phones would work great in most situations, but won't be great performers if your doing production or into bass-intensive music.

I listen to mostly anything. Coldplay, Kanye West, even Madonna
Are these headphones good for it, or the HD 202's? I'm leaning towards the HD 202's because the build quality on them seems quite nice compared to the Sony's.

LIke I said before, depends. I myself am borderline audiophile (without the huge bank account, so I compromise). Unless your really picky like me, those phones look great. One of the biggest things I look for in phones is comfort and POSITIVELY over-ear design, that sony pair appears to have both. 15$? what a steal! I would say go for it unless you would rather pay 50-100$ for a superior pair, it's all up to you.

I personally think past 150$ 90% of people would be hard pressed to tell any different in sound quality, unless of course you go 5.1 surround phones, but that's a whole different story

im going to recommend you stay away from the sonys, the ear cups are cheap and very uncomfortable after long use and they like to keep heat in, your ears can get really warm pretty fast.

i have used them numerous times, i am not a fan.

Exactly what I mean. I had NC6's from Sony which caused nothing but trouble. I hated them.

But the thing is, I really wanted HD 201's, but AFAIK they aren't seen here in Toronto often. Can you get me a link for one? Thanks Schubs

That's nothing, I used to sport a pair of Koss 4AA's, now THAT'S uncomfortable ^_^

Just knowing that the George Martin/Beatles themselves used these was enough for me though.

Ah, the HD202's. Now they're not bad headphones, they're better than most walmart headphones for the price. They tend to be bloated with far to much bass, to the point where it's muddy, not the tight clean bass that is needed The HD202 is extremely warm, dark and bass heavy, with a recessed midrange and very subdued top end. If you like BOOMS and sudden explosions, not moving feet, these are the headphones for you [Looks at UT players]. These are good gaming headphones for RTS, extremely fast FPS, or MMORPG's. They get the job done. Comfort is average, but the headphones feel cramped at times. If you can find the HD201's though, pick them up.

Bottom line: Heavy on the bass, muddy, solid, gaming headphones. [**]

Sennheiser HD201 - 25$ [202's Non-bassy brother]

The HD201's tend to picked amongst true audiophiles more often, but are overlooked due to their availability. The HD201 to most ears much better balanced than the 202's, which means a much leaner but clearer bass, clearer midrange and a good top end without becoming overpowering or sibilant (given decent source material of course). These are considered to the best bang for your buck under 75$ , some might even argue under 100$. It's the cleaner, tighter brother to the HD202's, very good for any game you throw at it.

Bottom Line: Clean, balanced, extremely good bang for your buck. [***]

Those Sonys that you mentioned are utter crap, the sound quality is terrible, they look cheap, and the right side will go out after a month.
I was about to link you up with that link for the sennheisers, I bought them from dell, and got overnight delivery, they were at my door the very next morning with free shipping, this is something I wasn't used to in Canada.

Get those HD202's they are pretty much the best thing you can get in Canada in your pricerange.

Somebody who has experience. I love OCN

Anyways, what do these headphones feel like? Are they really bassy like other people say?

I find the headphones comfortable, however if you have a really big head I suggest you take a pass. I'm 6'5" and I guess my head must be small, because I think they are pretty nice-fitting. They are closed headphones so they can get a bit warm after a few hours of use, but if you take 15 min break it shouldn't be a problem.

They have great mid-bass, and I'm pretty sure only audiophiles will call them out on being too bassy, your avg mp3 listening joe won't complain at all.

They are good entry headphones and should get you on your way to becoming an audiophile. They are good enough to notice the imperfections with onboard audio, once you plug them in, you will most likely hear a hissing noise when nothing is on, it will be inaudible once you play some music. Your onboard will be responsible for that sound, not the headphones.

If you can find a decent soundcard they will sound a lot better, you can easily turn the bass down and add a bit more trebble and the main complaint about them will be gone. I got my Xfi here on this site for 50 cad shipped (better than 130$ at futureshop before tax heh). Look around the for sale thread, I think I saw the extreme music card for pretty damn cheap recently.
