Media com blocked my DVR

i tried to record a show on tv with my HTPC and it says media com deemed this not to be recordable and canceled my recording about 2 minutes in.

How do they know if someone is recording tv via coax?

I use media center 2005 edition, could it have something to do with the tv guide and how it gets updates?

People use TIVO all the time, how is that any different?

I don't know exactly how it works, but I have Optimum Cable and they can do the same thing. When I got the Cablevision-provided Scientific Atlanta unit, it didn't work until I called them, and they sent a signal to the box saying "ok DVR, you are authorized to record now". I'd guess it is something equivalent to a MAC address.
