memory upgrade problem

Hi there. i think i have kind of solved this now but am posting just in-case i am wrong in my conclusion.

i have a set of these

GeIL Black Dragon 4GB DDR2 (2 x 2GB) 800MHz PC-6400 : GB24GB6400C5DC

and thought now i got win 7 64bit i might as well go to 8gb so brought another set.

i have an asus m3n-ht deluxe mempipe motherboard (latest bios)
XFX XXX GTX285 1gb (191.07 drivers)
antec 900
800watt power supply sli ready

now when i first tried to plug the memory in i got nothing on screen so tried 1 stick in at a time and it boots and ran fine. so i tried the other stick that ran fine too. then i tried the different memory slots also both modules ran fine.

i tried both modules together in another motherboard and still it ran fine so i now know the memory works and not faulty.

i have now found out that my motherboard supports 8gb max memory so i started to think could the graphics card memory be included in this max limit.

so i now stuck a 1gb spare stick in the last slot and hey it works fine but as soon as i try and replace that 1gb with a 2gb version i get no display or boot up.

so my conclusion is that the graphics card memory is included in the total memory allowed thus when i try and put 8gb of system ram the motherboard is thinking that there is 9gb or ram on it. (8gb system ram +1gb graphics card ram)

I am running flawlessly with 7gb system ram and 1gb graphic ram so is this the right conclusion or is there something else?

Your GPU wouldn't be taken into account, can you set timings for individual ports on your mobo or not? If they are the not same that could cause the issue with the booting.

I have tried setting timings manually and using its auto setting both have no progress. i have to take the stick out to change as i dont get anything on screen when i have it it but 7gb is still working flawlessly for me. just cant get it using 8gb working. have tried different 2gb sticks and still no luck. i just cant seam to get past 7gb or ram.

I think that it is simply a limitation of the CPU most likely. I know AMD CPUs sometimes have issues running all 4 RAM slots but in your case, it works fine with all 4 populated, just not at 8GB. You want to try setting your RAM timings to auto and then bump the voltage on them a little and see what happens.
