I am attempting to build a modest 50 person Minecraft server. The key parts I need help with are Motherboard, CPU, and Memory. I found an inexpensive motherboard ASRock H61MV-ITX LGA $50. I am going with a MicroITX because I already have a Case for it. The computer will have 16 GB of memory. I and wondering if this will be a good fit and which CPU i3, i5, or i7 would be the best option. The server will be running Ubuntu 12.04 server with no GUI.

My worry is the motherboard. The current server i have was an old gaming computer that will not start without a PS2 keyboard plugged in. That may seem like a ridiculous worry, but i really want the ability plant this server anywhere and not worry about it.

I am looking to come in under $500 all together. This is what i have so far:

BitFenix Prodigy Arctic White Steel / Plastic Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case
Item #: N82E16811345017

Athena Power AP-MFATX35 350W Mini ITX
Item #: N82E16817338063

G.SKILL Value Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
Item #: N82E16820231608

ASRock H61MV-ITX LGA 1155 Intel H61
Item #: N82E16813157367

Intel Core i5-3350P Ivy Bridge 3.1GHz
Item #: N82E16819116782

From what I've from similar posts about minecraft servers the main bottleneck is the bandwidth. And also the I/O e.g. the hard drives. But it looks like you don't need to know about that part. I'm glad to see somebody else on the ubuntu 12.04 bandwagon. Although the next LTS is coming next month. So you could do 14.04LTS instead. Not that you asked.

I think about every BIOS I've ever seen has an option to disable halting on errors. And this would especially true for new boards running UEFI. I actually have a bunch of random desktops I use for server experimenting running headless and never had such an issue.

For the old one I would recommend both replacing the CMOS battery and making sure you're on the latest BIOS version for the board. One or both of those might actually solve that problem. I don't have any UEFI boards but I assume there's updates for those as well so keep it up to date...
