So I am at the point of buying the actual hardware for my new mineral oil computer. This will be used pretty much for single-monitor gaming with the potential for a mild overclock (I am new to overclocking so I am not going to do anything stupid). I would like to have this as futureproof as possible since dealing with mineral oil can be a pain. This is also my first self-build so please excuse any noobery

Corsair XMS3 4gig 1600 - $104

EVGA P55 LE - $140

i7-860 - $280

Windows 7 64-bit OEM - $100

ASUS GTX 480 $470

Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775 - $124

Total with shipping and discounts - $1160 w/o hard drive (see below)

I was originally planning on getting the 5870, but the GPU and PSU have a pretty massive combo discount ($70!).

I am not sure about the HD. I would like to keep all parts in the tank but I can’t put a mechanical hard drive in oil. I could keep the mechanical hard drive out but I don’t like the idea of a bare hard drive sitting around. I could get a SSD, but then my computer is getting out of budget. I only have about 85 gigs on my current computer and would not expect much more than that on my new one. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

You could just get an external HD enclosure.

I wish mineral oil cooled better, then I'd be more inclined to try it.

I actually just found an old enclosure and ripped it apart. It should work. How does the hardware look? I have a feeling I am missing something....

External enclosure...or partition whatever use are using for a case (Aquarium, box, etc.) You'll have a dry side, for optical drives, HDD and the wet side for everything else

I don't want the oil anywhere close to my hd. Right under the lid there is 'some' room, but not enough I'd say.

How are you going to get the oil to flow over the components? The company that actually built and sold the oil-filled rigs had to use waterblocks on the GPU/CPU etc and pump the oil like a water-cooling setup, despite the case being filled with oil.

Problem is, like air without fans creating flow, the hot parts have stagnant oil.

You are missing an ODD.
And maybe stuff like a screen, and your peripherals.
Feels weird because this is your first time building a rig without having to buy a 'case' right.

You could grab a 4-6core amd chip for cheaper and have a cheaper board, then get a decent sized ssd on sale.

Between the pond pump pumping the oil through the radiator and all the fans in the aquarium, there is plenty of movement. Also, I built a test computer with old parts and you could actually see the warm oil move in the tank. It was crazy. I will be putting more fans in to stir it up too.

I have everything else I need. I have been picking up stuff when it was on super sale and building what I didn't want to buy.
