Dumb question but what im doing im building a new computer and my card only has 1 hdmi out and 2 mini display ports. My question is im running the only hdmi to my monitor but I also wanna be able to play steam big picture on my tv when not playing on my monitor if I use the mini display port and I loosing any resloution or performance coming from a diplay port rather than the hdmi port ill be playing on a 55inch 3D tv so ill be playing in 3d sometimes to.

You will not be loosing any res, display port is capable at very high resolutions, I am running my 1440p monitor over DP right now.

Display port is better for monitors, but I would use a hdmi on your tv for the ease of sound thru your tv.

In my head I was thinking easy because you can just plug hdmi into your tv and have sound and DP into your screen, but I forget that not all screens have DP.
