Ok, I'm using PClinuxOS, its supposed to be mandrake based, but it has synaptic and stuff
and and apt-get command, anyway....it uses about 400-500mb of my ram, is that normal for linux to eat up so much ram? how do I cut back on that?

It's probably the kernel caching file handles and other resources to speed things up--if applications request more RAM, this cache will be released. Almost all of my RAM is being used right now (I have 23 MiB free out of 1 GiB), but my system is running smoothly.
