See finished results here!

I unfortunately am stuck with the V2 5770.
To help get past the 128bit bottleneck this card has, the higher I can get the memory the better.
I noticed that ATI so kindly left all these PCB screw holes in the board.
So, I will be making my very own, custom backplate for it to cool the back of the memory.
I will also be putting on little HS thingies on the front side of the memory chips.

Stupid V2 cooler...

I put little red dashes on everything I would like to get the backplate to cool.

^^^
The chips are made by Samsung, which is great. These potentially have some good potential

I just need a little input from you guys.

Thnx for any replies.
I will be keeping a worklog and updating pictures as I go.

Down below this post is where I will keep the project updated.

Subbed. I might try this after seeing what you do. The 5770 I get for christmas will probably will be more v2 cooler model.
First of all, I think all mods for the most part are cool. However, have you thought of purchasing those ram heatskinks for this card? Example presented. I'm not discouraging you from the mod, just presenting this idea.

Your best bet is 6061 Aluminum plate (2024 and 7075 are harder to cut and more expensive). I would go with either .062 or .093 for a backplate. Ideal tools for a homebrewer would be a standard hand drill (don't forget centerpunch), and a jewelers saw for fine cuts.

Yeah, those are what I will be putting on the front side of the memory. The side of the memory thats closest to the cooler.
I just think a backplate would take up less room and look cooler.
Plus I get to mess around with something.

Thnx for that.
I got pretty much all the tools I would need. My dad's big on this kinda stuff.

Updated OP with pics.

Hands down for the "look cooler" part. Those heatsinks are ugly as hell. Backplate wins.
Cool looking forward to this. Soo you got rid of the 275 co-op then?

Sure did.
I missed ATI too much.

And I like power.
So I got a 5770. Lol.
I will be getting a second one hopefully before Christmas or for Christmas.
If this goes well I will do it for both cards.
And maybe make one to give away to a fine member of OCN.

I can has your 5850?
And I didn't want the V2 cooler.
I ordered a V1 and was sent a V2.
It was gunna be too much of a hassle to RMA it, pay shipping, wait a month to get a new one.
So I was just like whatever.

Yeah, it is.

Guys, I will be doing my "rough draft" of the backplate here soon.
I will use paper, then cardboard, then sheet metal, then the actual backplate metal.
I don't feel like messing up too much.

im getting 2 v1's and iirc it doesn't have a backplate cooler. Is it worth spending the $10 or whatever to get ramsinks for the back of the ram or not?

Ok, so I just finished the "paper backplate."
I just wanted to get a rough idea of what it will look like.

First of I needed to re-sink it.
Stock gunk makes me mad.

Here is with the cooler off. Its a pretty small GPU.

And pretty flat too.

Here all I did was cut the paper to match the card, and avoid the CF bridge plug things.

Poked holes for the screws and cut out an area to avoid some tall soldered places.

Finished the cut-out. I went back and straightened out all the not so straight cuts after this.

Will be doing more soon.

That'd work too! The 'number' gives it it's own page, the 'permalink' pulls you to that particular post in the thread
