Modding a res, suggestions?

For some unknown reason, I've decided to take the pump/res from my old WC setup and use it as a res only, instead. We'll see how it all fits when i get the other stuff, but, I was hoping I could have some input on this mod.

Here's a pic of the original item:

Here's a pic of the top:

And, of course, it opened up:

My idea is to remove the built in pump, and simply use it as a res. Why bother spending 20 bucks on a res, and another 15-20 on a flowmeter when I already have them? Just remove the old 400lph pump, throw in a piece of tubing to connect the backing to the res, and viola!

I'll be using a Swiftech 655 (not to be mounted in here, obviously) and swap out the hoses to 1/2id 5/8 od tygon for higher flow. I'm using a rad I already have, and I'm changing all of the barbs (even on the GTZ) to 1/2 silver barbs.

My question is: Should I run tubing straight in? or, should I just remove the pump and the 2 hoses and mount a single hose in between the backing and the res? Either solution will allow me to close it back up, I just think using the barb on the backing will allow me a little more flexibility in modifying the setup later.

Well, am I insane? or... does this look interesting, at least? Any constructive criticism would be appreciated.

I would like to know if that cooler master WC thingy takes up only 2 bays or if it takes up 3 bays. It looks cool BTW.

It's 2 bay.. it's from the Aquagate Max kit.
Yeah it will work. Why don't you replace the current pump with something better? I'm sure you'll be able to find a decent pump that will work great in the current config with minot to none modifications.

EDIT: i was thinking of something in this line: http://www.petrastechshop.com/dadencp12vin.html but i see the inet/outlet won't fit the config of the aquagat max. Maybe somebody can give a link to something similar, but with the inlet/outlets aligning to that of the res.
I'm not sure that I understand the question (it's me
), but I would completely remove all unnecessary components, and run the tubing out the backside with as few connections as possible.

Because of the size and placement of the reservoir you might have to drill and route the tubing through the bottom?

Imma guessing as it is difficult for me to envision the requirements without actually seeing the hardware in person.

Oh lord, it's not a looker is it?

If i were you, i would spend the relatively small amount of money and get a nice, perspex 5.25" bay one, such as the XSPC res.
the res is OK, the pump looks like a DB-1 pump, which is a great little pump, not too powerful, but still a great little pump. if you run CPU only i'd just keep using that one as it is.

Yeah, it's not that powerful... only 400lph. That's why I ordered the 655. It does 1200lph and I figured while I'm at it, I'll jump up to 1/2in tubing to allow more flow. I wanted to build in the expandability now while keeping the even look of the "Cooler Master" res on a CM case. It just seems to fit.

But with the new pump, I'll be able to add on items later without worrying about having to upgrade the entire system. Maybe add a rad , or something.

Besides, being CPU only, it'll just keep it that much cooler!

yeah, i'd set the pump at setting 4 though... just a bit more silent and the pump itself will dump a little less heat in the water... put it on 5 when you upgrade to more blocks and rads.
