Plug in a microphone. As weird as it sounds; it works.
if you've got a mic use it. If you don't, look for a simple free emulator/fake microphone/virtual audio cable.

do that or try this:

assuming you have onboard sound.

Goto: control panel -> hardware and sound -> sound -> recording tab.

then right-click in the whitespace and select "show disabled devices"

enable stereo mix restart the game! you may need a reboot.

I had this same exact problem with COD4 multiplayer, weird they haven't fixed it...

this game is extremely buggy right now....I've had my rank reset on me now 3 times.I may not play it until they come out with some sorta patch to fix this crap. It's the ONLY game that causes my computer to bsod
You need a microphone to start the .exe?

Holly hell, did they even bug test the game?

if it's the same problem from COD4, you needed stereo mix enabled in the control panel or a mic if you are using onboard sound. This didn't seem to happen for people with dedicated cards.

Go into games list in steam.

Right Click MW2

Properties

Local files

Verify integrity of game files

That should fix any bad exe or any bad game file in general. Fixed my black screen crashing at least.
Mine freezes at the menu after the game loads and gives me the same error if I try to close it with task manager. I just let it sit for 5 minutes and it unfreezes.
everythings up to date. the verifying integrity thing doesn't work.
my game doesnt start.
I went round and round with Activision about this problem... I was taken from the general support through email and sent to actual techs. It took about 2 weeks before they realized they didn't know what they were talking about. With some computers the simple fixes you can find from googling will work. My problem was different. This is the latest email I received from Activision:

It appears that you are using an Nvidia Nforce based motherboard and the issue may be that the Nvidia firewall (called active armor) and Nforce Intelligent Application Manager that was installed is having trouble with the game.

-Uninstall any existing nForce networking drivers prior to installing this package.

Maybe give it a try if your mobo fits the profile... It worked for me. From what it seems, the game does NOT like programs running in the background. I agree, they need a patch. Fast. Dedicated servers would be nice to come with that patch
