Monitor For FPS Gaming: 120hz vs 60hz

29844 Views 20 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  xquisit
I was going to buy a 22" samsung 233RZ that displays at 1680x1050 @ 120hz. I have recently heard our eyes can't really take advantage of anything past 30/60hz(fps), but the smoothness of the game does rely on a good hz/fps rate.

You can see my system in my sig, and I was wondering... Should I go for a Good 1920x1200/1080 or a 120hz LCD. My main concern is..will the 60hz really look the same as a monitor with 120hz. I do not have any stores I can compare with, so going to a store is not an option.

I am buying online, but I am located in Socal... so newegg is a good option to buy from..but then again the 120hz monitor (the samsung is not for sale, but the viewsonic 120hz model is).

I really want to know what you guys would recommend for just GAMING first person shooters.

It would mean a lot if someone with a 120hz monitor can chime in on this debate.

Let me know what I should go with, and why.

Thank you for your time

Most of the people here game with 60hz LCDs and they are going to tell you its good to game on. Yeah .. ok..

I had a CRT that i sold 4 years ago for a VX922 60hz LCD monitor (2ms) from viewsonic and it was fun for movies but terrible for gaming. Just check the other posts in monitors forum about 120hz lcds monitor, its worth it.

I myself own a 2233RZ and a CRT and i can tell u that there is a difference between them but not so much. the 2233RZ is close to a CRT performance.. im not talking about 60hz monitors because to me its really terrible. If you want i can show you some videos i made today in cs 1.6 with 60hz and 120hz

or just google 2233rz on youtube to see the difference between 60hz and 120hz monitors
I think 120hz is definitely worth it. I have a 120hz tv and when I hook my pc up to it with an hdmi cord, it automatically upconverts the signal to 120hz and I can instantly tell the difference (not on the desktop of course but maybe in a movie or game). Its just much smoother. And this is just upconversion. I can't imagine how it would look if it was natively set at 120hz. I say go ahead and pick it up.
120hz TVs are not true 120hz. 120hz (the 2 models available) LCDs are.

Your eyes can take advantage of a 120hz LCD monitor because 120hz means the monitor takes less time to buffer the frame to put it on the monitor. Its not really about how many fps the human eyes can see

Its about performance

First of all LCD monitors don't refresh the whole screen every cycle so that term (refresh rate) doesn't mean the same thing on an LCD as compared to a CRT. Only the pixels that change will refresh, the others will remain static with 5hz or 5000hz. Simply put, 120hz LCD monitors do not refresh 120 times per second. It's a simulated effect produced by the monitor that does not effect the monitor's latency, which is actually the most important statistic on LCD screens when it comes to FPS performance & reaction time.

Yes go with the larger resolution over 120hz refresh rate. Aside from the size, the difference will be minor. Upconverting a 60hz signal to 120hz simply doubles each of the 60 frames and not everyone can see a difference. A larger screen size & resolution will probably make more of a difference to you.

First of all, CRT monitors are the best for raw performance. No other type of screen is as fast. Period. Many of them are able to produce more detail than LCDs. On the negative, they eat power like mad, are XL and very heavy.

As far as LCDs go, I recommend at least an HD monitor (a 24" monitor with 1920x1200 resolution is fine for me). Specifically I recommend the monitor in my sig rig or most Samsung TN panel monitors that don't have a built in TV tuner. Smasung has a zero dead pixel policy so you will not have a dead spot. Get it from tigerdirect.com or another retailer (lenovo.com) that has a better return policy than newegg.

Its funny how we talk about this in vent, then you post about it. Dude go with that LCD you picked out, like I was saying you will be happy. I really like LG and Samsung for LCD brands. You are on the right track. Now go buy it!

Ok, so pretty much the debate here is... If your eyes can see the difference go with the 120hz, but most people will be happy with the difference seen from 1280x to 1920x1200 res, correct?

I mean.. I somewhat understand about the latency issue, but isn't the 3ms GTG (not sure about BTG) a good #?

I want to play some new games, and they are going to be First-person-shooters... so a CRT monitor would probobly be very hard to find, and I don't want to buy a used one.

If it comes down to LCD choice:

Samsung/Viewsonic 120hz LCD monitors
Samsung/L brand that's in your sig LED 1920x1200 LCD Monitor

I am not sure which I would like.. I am going to message the second poster, and ask for videos for differences on the two monitors when playing counter-strike.

I am going to +rep everyone, thank you for helping me out so far!

Right, this thing about 'human eyes cannot see passed BLAH BLAH fps / hz' Is utter bull**** - our eyes dont work in frames lmao, ANYONE could tell the difference between 60 and 120, 120 vs 200, 30 vs 60.

Heres a very good website for monitors: www.digitalversus.com
- basically taught me that manufacturers specs for response time are quite useless, these guys actually test the responsiveness and input lag to actually see what it is.

I recently got a viewsonic 120hz lcd - I play high level competative cs and I can say its great... Very responsive and cant notice any input lag. I tried playing on my brothers standard 75hz monitor the other and its like a slide-show compared with 120hz. Definately worth it... only about £200 now aswell.

I heard bad things about the Viewsonic one. It tends to be more "yellowish"
I dont know if its a true 120hz like the 2233RZ

Like people said, a 2 ms LCD is not 2ms delay. It takes way more time than that to put the frame on the monitor.

120hz, ur monitor works twice as fast for rendering frame compared to a 60hz ( or close to twice )

I think its like 14ms response time for a 60hz and 8ms for a 120hz LCD

I remember reading this in an article so dont quote me this is not exact numbers

The point is: 60hz LCDs works slower, so u get ghosting.

why ru making this so techical?um i have a 60hz monitor from lg with 2ms(gtg) and i have no problems, looks perfeclty smooth , since im getting 60fps on my games, anything lower than 60fps then it looks laggy. i dont think it matters.lots of ppl have 60hz monitors and have no problems. just cuz u get a 120hz doesnt mean yorue going to be better in a game rofl

That 2ms is only for G2G. Actually know what you are talking about when you post a comment.

but screensize matters a lot too...especially for hitting opponents really far away for HS.

I found this peculiar viewsonic 26" model...very nice real world responsiveness for a 24"+ monitor.

Both are pretty much the same in terms of responsiveness and input lag.

"The VX2268vm goes one better than the 2233rz. It isn't very far ahead, with just half a frame of transparent ghosting less, but it can now claim the crown of the most responsive monitor yet. It's entirely worth its five stars, especially given that its input lag is less than one frame. In short, it's perfect for gaming!" - digitalversus.com

VIEWSONIC

+Better Quality greys
+Better colour accuracy

SAMSUNG

+Better contrast (Im guessing this would be good for 3d glasses as they dim the contrast naturally)
