Monitor for gaming..

7419 Views 120 Replies 44 Participants Last post by  Abboud24
I just built a new pc. 5870 ATI XFX is the card being used to power the monitor.. I'm mainly into gaming, watching movies and general pc use. I was looking for maybe a 1920 x 1200 display. I just want high quality picture and timing for the display. I looked around and seen the ASUS 25.5 wasn't a bad pick for the price and most of the reviews I seen were good for the quality-price performance. Just any help on any monitors that are great for gaming that are big (guess it doesn't have to be, atleast hoping for 24") and have high quality picture and speed. Thanks

I want to get this ordered in the next week or so!

I think he means LCD. Any LCD with a 5ms or below response time and above 5,000:1 contrast ratio will be fine really.

.... TFT is a LCD, and yes while CRTs will have higher refresh rates most games wont require nor render higher than 85MHz visibly but graphic design and scaling is great with CRTS ! If you can find one, what is your budget ? Give this NEC 22'' CRT

edit: RaynB213 has the best avatar on OCN !

85 STOCKING MHz!!? Where do you get your pots from

Games will always render at the same speed that the Monitors Hz is unless it's capped.
V.sync keeps the FPS at the Hz limit.
Playing at 100Hz with V.sync on a CRT beats any TFT (not anyday but at least these days, may come some faster non-ghosting solutions in the near future).

To bad the CRT's are big (deep) and chew wattage for breakfast

Speaking of breakfast, I'll be nappin' my self before it's breakfast here.

EDIT: That NEC was mediocre... Max resolution 1920*1440? my 19' Samsung Syncmasters manage 2048*1536 at 60Hz...

EDIT2: For some reason reviews states my 957MB's at 1920*1440... then the NEC must also support 2048*1536.

Yeah, I was thinking LCD.. my price range wouldn't be more than $400 really. Oo it cuts out that Samsung Syncmaster 245B that one of you had. Since I could only find that for $600 or so. Any links would be nice.. I use newegg, tigerdirect or amazon.
My friend owns this one and loves it:

However, I'm sure everyone will attack me because of the 5ms response...
You won't even notice the difference between 2ms and 5ms.
I absolutely love my Samsung P2570. It is actually a 24.6" with a resolution of 1920x1080. I know 1080p has less pixels than 1920x1200 obviously but I prefer 16:9 over 16:10. Also, ghosting really isn't a problem with it, or for me anyway. And it is under your budget

I agree, but most of the people here seem to think they can. I've had friends claim they can tell the difference between a mouse with 2 ms response and one with 1 ms response...

Yeah, my monitor is 2ms grey to grey and I see no motion blur at all. And I watch a CRT TV and had a CRT monitor less than a year ago.

I can't say I see the difference between 2ms and 5ms but from CRT 0ms to TFT 2ms+ there's a world of difference.
Worst panel I've come across was a Packard Bell monitor that had 18ms...

I would agree if this was like, a year or two back, but monitors have really increased in quality since then. The ghosting and delay between the two platforms are miff at this point.

The asus you linked above is great, but sold out. Honestly, any of those monitors are good choices, I would just go with the price tag that's the most appealing.

I recommend the Samsung 2048x1152 monitor. Awesome resolution, cheap and great monitor!
