hey all im building a system at the moment and have decided to stick with a Q6600 ( instead of core i7 ).
Could anyone please suggest a motherboard best for a Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz+
a 4870X2 & DDR2 1066+ support.
have ordered a Corsair TX 750W aswell, and will be liquid cooling, sitting on air for about a month before liquid though.

Thanks.

welcome to OCN.......i guess depends on what your budget is
Duh, Gigabyte P35-DS3L

^_~

They're goin for $50 shipped in the for sale forum!
On the high side, I recommend the Asus Rampage Formula; a very popular board on OCN and abroad

Q6600, ATI, DDR2, and water = Rampage Formula.

I would recommend these boards (in order of price)

ASUS P5Q Pro $120
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P $137
ASUS P5Q-E $147
ASUS Rampage Formula $289

They will all OC pretty well, but the Rampage Formula has 16x to both PCI-E in crossfire, the others have 8x to both PCI-E in crossfire.

I recommend getting Gigabyte with P45 chipset
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6: The Most Overclocker Mainboard Out There
or GA-EP45-DS5 (with TPM that's what I have)
GA-EP45-DS4
not DS3 (weak chipset cooling)

I recommend the Asus Rampage Formula. It's not cheap but the the X48 chipset and 16x Crossfire are excellent. Next I would recommend the P45 chipset though they are 8x Crossfire but mine works great at 3.6 GHz with the Q6600 the price difference is minimal...I say go all out if you can.

The UD3P is also pulling a 490 FSB OC with quad cores. Our Own Robilar here on OCN is running the board through it's paces ATM. And at sub $150, it is the best price/performance crossfire board out there.

Overclocking the EP45-UD3P, we found ourselves extremely impressed. With only six voltage rails we didn't expect to see extremely high clock speeds, however GIGABYTE seems to have done a very impressive job with the UD3 design. We managed to press the FSB up to a max speed of 558MHz FSB; that's not far off the EP45 Extreme and ASUS' P5Q. We did have to tweak all of the FSB and CPU voltages a little as well as push DRAM to 2.3v, however, the board remained stable at this speed across all our tests. Pressing to 560MHz caused us lock ups in Premiere Elements 4, so we considered this unstable and 558MHz was our highest FSB; well done GIGABYTE.

Due to time-constraints, I wasn't able to spend as much time with overclocking as I would have liked, and had to omit testing with a Dual-Core processor. However, I'd expect the results there to be quite similar to what we saw with the EP45-EXTREME, although maybe not as high. With our Quad-Core though, we hit an impressive 490MHz... just 10MHz shy of what we accomplished on the EP45-EXTREME. This was accomplished with 1.4v to the CPU and 1.59v to the Northbridge.

Depending on the budget, either Asus P5Q-e or Gigabyte X48-DS4 is fine.
