I couldn't believe it either. Haven't used it long enough for definitive answer, but so far so good.

I used to recommend avast, but then those same people I recommended it to kept getting infected. So I ditched it all together. Out of 5 users I installed it for, 3 of them were seriously infected.

I've switched everything over to MSE even on my rigs, and so far nothing for 5 months. We'll see.

I used to be an AVG Free, but it started getting bloated and they were constantly upgrading (not updating) so it seemed I was always installing their "newest" version. I never had a problem with either, but my sister and a friend had viruses with AVG.
MSE also has pretty good malware protection also.

i can not install mse. it says that a packet is missing code:0x8004FF56

have you made sure you don't have any remnants from other virus programs? try CCleaner registry scanner

Mse is free, doesnt constantly try to get you to upgrade to a "ultimate" version, and generally does it job pretty well

I felt a slowdown when browsing with Avast 6.

Others don't though, but it felt a bit slower for me.
