I have an MSI 870A-G54 motherboard and my amd phenom 965 processor didnt work with the motherboard and it wouldnt post or anything.

I did some research online and found alot of people having the same problem
and found out that the highest supported cpu is the phenom ii x2 555.

I also was notified that the reson for my cpu not working with the MOBO is because u need bios version 4.0 for it and my board is 3.1.

Is is possible to use another processor like the phenom ii x2 555 or something else just so that i could post and get into the bios and update it to 4.0?

I ran a 1055T on that board, so i find it very odd that it doesn't support the X4 965. Both the 1055T and the 965 are 125w (albeit the board struggles with 125w CPU's at anything other than stock).

I have read the CPU supported list and the 965 is not on the list, although i believe the 965 came out after this board. So your best be is to consult MSI directly or RMA the board if you can.

Honestly this board has a very high VRM failure rate, so a RMA would be ideal for you, see these threads Here and Here for details.

You can if you can get hold of another supported CPU, shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I actually called MSI and they said that the processor was definitly supported
but thats very odd cause i have tried pretty much everything to get my board to post so im just gonna try to update bios with another cpu

Thanks! +Rep

Although I do not recommend that this board be run with any 125W processors due to high VRM failure rate, this board SHOULD have the 965 on the support list...

To all those saying the vrm's suck I used the board for a year straight with a 970 overclocked to 4.2ghz at stock till 1 week ago I upgraded to a 990FXA-GD80 from MSi
and I never had any problems except with the bios but updating that fixed it.

Maybe your board socket came DOA or the CPU? something must not be installed correctly are all the cables connected correctly? make sure the CPU power cable is plugged and the 24pin to the motherboard and all other cables then power it on again, make sure the RAM is properly seated aswell.
