My Arch Install

Well, after too many LiveCD's and clean installs that didn't work and never did everything I wanted on my laptop (in my sig), I am going to install Arch Linux.

I have heard great things and I am prepared to take the plunge. This thread will be for my questions so if you have installed Arch or know enough about Linux to maybe be of some use, please subscribe.

Downloading now.

Linux is ownage. Running ubuntu server 8.10 right now. Never had experience with arch but I have with lots of other linux OS's. Good luck with this one!
I wouldn't recommend Arch as a first distro but if you don't mind rolling up your sleeves maybe you will have alot of fun. You should probaly sign up on the arch forums if you didn't already.

I run Slackware for about 5 years now and a bunch of other NIX so if I can help I will
good luck. be sure to read through, understand, and have a nearby copy of the arch linux user's guide and the arch linux beginner's guide.

also, make sure you follow the instructions for setting up your mirrors so you don't accidentally get stuck DLing from throttled ones.

be wary - apparently the ati drivers for arch were removed from the official repos, or something like that... i don't know how true that statement is but you will need to get over it somehow if you want to get X working

I've messed around with lots of Linux distros until recently. My 4870 doesn't play nice with default drivers and my laptop was having problems too.

So my Linux background is pretty good, but this will be my first time doing it from scratch. I figure if I have to mess around with it all the time to get it to work, might as well get it to work the way I want.

Yeah I hear you buddy. That's why I like Slackware which was really the first Linux I tried. I tried a bunch of other ones but they all made me feel sick LOL.

I don't think Radeon support is that great on Linux to be honest. Nvidia drivers work awesome without anything special, you just run their script and they work.

Oh, that sounds like fun. We'll see how it goes.

Yeah, I just need it to work. Most liveCDs just go to blank screen. PCLinuxOS and Mepis were the only two that worked.

Wow that's very uncool that LiveCDs don't work. Those two you mentioned I think are notable for having good device driver selection. Any chance you can get a cheap nvidia card instead and use it for Linux? You will be very happy with it.

If Arch doesn't work for you try Slackware. It is not hard at all like people say. It is just simple. Go step by step. When you are done you will understand Linux and not just one distro.
I enjoyed arch. One of the more advanced distros out there, but worth the time. Its no LFS or Gentoo, but you will learn more working with a distro like Arch, then working with the "Plug in the disk and play" type.

Have fun, and good luck. I would like to run it again soon

PCLinuxOS 2007 was my favorite linux distro. I like ubuntu server too. I use it as my home file server. I may try arch soon.
Well, it has gone very smooth so far. I am now installing KDE so this is the moment of truth. If that works, at least it will look pretty.
Okay, so far everything has gone rather well. I do have some problems that I don't know how to solve. I am using KDEmod. Here they are:

1. Speakers hiss when I startx and the desktop appears or when I logout of KDE. It isn't a hiss like static but more like a high pitched slightly staticy tone. Happens when the notifications pop up in the bottom right. Disabled PC speaker

2. Automatic login isn't working right. I did what it say here (method 4) but it didn't change anything. I'll try the other methods tomorrow. Used this guide, method 1

3. Firefox looks horrid. Even when I apply a theme, it looks like I have turned off all visual niceness. The borders are nice and even the buttons from an Oxygen skin look nice, but the menus and area surrounding the buttons look very basic. Same with all right click menus in the DE.

4. Installed wicd for network and wired works fine (I used wired to install so it has been working since the beginning. Wireless, however, is not working. It shows up in ifconfig but in wicd there are no wireless networks found. Installed madwifi drivers, works great now

5. Clock is in military time. How do I get it into 12 hr with am and pm? Had to set my default Region and it adjusted everything for me.

6. Plugging in my usb drive. It is recognized but I can't access it. It is just called Volume (vfat) and that is all I can see. When I try to access it, it tells me Permission denied. Found this guide

So other than these problems, the desktop environment works well. It recognizes my battery and the ATI drivers installed nicely. I'll try and tackle these setbacks tomorrow.

if i remember some script needs to be made somwehere so automounting will work

orphanshadow is the one who helped me with that.
Orphan is a friend of mine, i think its a problem with policyKit and Hal you need to configure i will find his post etc , also the clock thing you should be able to just to click on it and configure it how you want etc and for firefox could do with some screenshots may be able to help you

EDIT : this will solve automounting

You probably have many window styles to choose from your KDE prefs. I don't use KDE or GNOME so I can't really help you specifically but just look for your desktop prefs and choose a window style you like. There are probably dozens. If that isn't enough then get a theme from mozilla addons.

Start looking over your KDE prefs. It has to be in there some where

How are you trying to access it? You may have to chmod the mount point to allow you to mount or access it as a user unless you are doing everything as root (don't do that)

I followed that guide and it is a no go. It didn't help as I still get the error I did before:

Quote:

An error occurred while accessing '[name of flash drive]', the system responded:
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolic y:
org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable no <-- (action,result)

I thought it may have just been my drive but it won't work with any flash drive.

EDIT: Found this guide, following it now. **FIXED**

So far this is the last thing remaining in my first list of problems:

Here you can see the firefox problem:

You can tell the buttons are skinned, but it just looks so blocky.

Okay, so the only remaining problem from the first list is the ugly Firefox menu bars.

So now my computer doesn't want to sleep. When I click the battery icon, it gives me the option to click sleep. Only problem is when I do, it looks like it goes to sleep then immediately comes back on with a locked session login box. Same behavior when closing lid. Sleep works, hibernate still does not.

Hibernate appears to only shutdown the computer. I have instaled the laptop tool packages, do I need to configure it?

I already said how to fix this.

As far as hibernate, it often doesn't work. You have to have an ACPI supported by Linux and sometimes your distro as well.
