My first build

I want to build a computer for the first time and need advice. I want to be able to play videos, surf the net, and get into some gaming. I also want to learn to overclock after I have the basics down. I did some shopping on newegg on black friday and this is what I have so far: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R, Antec 900, Ocz 500 watt modular, and a Samsung 24" 1920x1080. I need suggestions for a processor (thinking about e8400), graphics card, and ram. How would the e8400 and hd5770 work together? And as for ram what should I look for? ddr2 1066 since I want to go past 400 fsb? I will run win 7 64 bit so will 4gb be enough?

Welcome to the forum!!! (check out the site features guide in my sig). As for your choices, I think the 5770 is a great choice for a card and 4 gb is a great choice for ram. Just be sure to get 2x2gb so you can add more in the future. As for processors, I'm not to up on the Intel side of things so I'll let someone else respond to that.
My advice is to choose whatever processor you really want to run with and then select a MOBO/RAM that is compatible with it. Remember when building you need to make sure that you aren't going to bottleneck your system by getting an awesome 5770 and then get a processor that can't keep up with it. Also, if you can provide a budget people can give better suggestions for you and also a location so they can link you with sites to order from.

Welcome to OCN!

Welcome to OCN!

He has already purchased the MB so he can't really change that...

Whoops kind of read that as window shopping around.

Still, a budget and a location will provide the best opportunity for OCN to help you.

Great choice of mobo! The E8400 is a snap to OC and the 5770 should work very well. I use the 1066 ram and it does a good job.

Ram: start with 4 and see how you go. You are going to use 64 bit, so you can expand your memory anytime you like.

What type of CPU cooler are you think of? Remember your looking at OCing

Id seriously consider a 650w PSU... 500 seems a little light

<damn near the same set up as mine>

It sounds like you have been doing quite abit of reading already, as the parts you have bought are really good choices.

As for CPU, the E8400 is a really great choice. If you don't mind buying a used chip, check out the for sale threads of this forum, you can pick up an E8400 really cheap and often the sellers will state the chips OC' ability, so you can pick up a really good batch and so you know what kinds of speeds you should be aiming for when you get better at OC'ing.

The HD5770 is also a great graphics card, really good value for money, if you have a little extra to spend the HD5850 is worth considering aswell.

As for RAM, windows 7 will run really well on 4GB along with the specs you have already listed. You want to get a kit with nice CAS timings so you have plenty of room to play with them if you want to learn about tightening RAM timings too.
A kit like this would be ideal for you:

(is it just me or has DDR2 gotten really expensive lately??)

Good luck with the build and have fun OC'ing!

The 500W PSU will be sufficient but if you upgrade your GFX card or add a ton of HDD's, etc. you'll probably want a bigger one. I ran my AMD 5600+ and 4870 on a 500W and was only topping out around 350W max.
looks like a good setup for your first build.

Basically I want a system to bridge the gap between now and when Core i7 stuff gets cheaper. I'd like to keep the cpu and graphics card under $200 each. I only want a single card setup so thats why I choose the 500 watt ps and didnt go for the ud3p mobo. I dont really multi-task or do graphics work so I think 2 cores is all I need.
I need some advice on a cpu cooler..I'll be going with the e8400 and want to go with a Zalman cooler but not sure which one. Newegg seems to carry several models that are compatible but I want to make sure I buy one that wont give me any clearance issues.

Anyone else have doubts about the 500w psu? Most likely getting a single hd5770, maybe 2 hard drives and it needs to run all the case fans in the 900. I do plan on overclocking the cpu if that will make a difference. If I have calculated correctly, I'll never see over 350 watts total. I'll have 2 12v rails at 18A each...wouldnt that be fine for my setup?
Do you plan on overclocking? If not the stock cooling should suffice.
