My Girl Friend is going to kill me!! Help!!

2625 Views 50 Replies 34 Participants Last post by  HoldYrPistlstr8
I transfered all of her photo's and suff onto my RAID 0 array that was set up on my EP45 Extreme so that I could format her machine.

However since then I've sold the board and have got a MSI 790FX GD70 AMD motherboard, can I still get access to her files on the RAID 0 array and put them back on her laptop or am I going to be killed in my sleep by her?

No, RAID arrays can't be transferred between controllers.
Is there ANY way at all to save them?
I was able to transfer an array between different motherboards that had the same raid controller, Biostar 790GX > Asus 790FX. So you might be able to do it if you find someone with a P45 motherboard.

I can do it.

At the very least, putting the drives in the new system, in the right order, and creating an array with identical stripe size should allow one to run recovery software on the volume and get the pictures back.

Yes. keep the drives forever. Youre going to have to find a motherboard that uses the same raid controller. maybe a buddy or computer repair shop can do you this service. dont go nuts over it. theres a way out of this, stay positive. but until then, keep her mind off of it. You do know what girls like right?
I've gone from RAID 0 on EP45 to the SAME RAID 0 array on my Bloodrage X58 board.

The drives are still in RAID 0 so put them as secondary in another rig with them in RAID 0 and you should be able to extract what you need.

EDIT - I also did not even have to reinstall my OS. The transferred RAID array booted right up, installed a bunch of drivers, and that's about it.
With a RAID 0 configuration, you won't be able to get any data off without your old board (or a matching replacement) I'm not sure if the RAID array is linked to some serial on the controller that configured it..
There's some software on google that claims to be able to recover data from RAID arrays

Plug hard drives into another computer. Set them up in RAID 0.

Extract data.

Done.
RAID chips are usually quite common anyway, so matching them shouldn't be too great an issue. It's usually the latest ICHxxR chipset on Intel boards.
You should be able to get files on a different mobo.

nakez pics?

Well said! I couldn't have said it any better.

Just hit up a computer shop with those drives. I'm sure they can make it happen. Good luck man and take care of your girl before she gets all mad at you.

There's 7 years worth of photo's/memories and all sorts in this folder that's trapped on my RAID array, I HAVE to get it off!!
This is exactly why I prefer software raid. You can rebuild the array on any machine that you can plug the drives into. Software raid works MUCH better on linux/bsd than it does on windows though.
I have transferred my array all they way from P35->x38->P45->x48->x58 (ICH9R-> ICH10R) but I would not recommend to transfer between different raid controllers if you really want to get killed by her in sleep. You know how females are about their pictures. You best bet is to get any of the above mentioned boards and get it going again.

I think that this is why they say that RAID isn't a Backup strategy. Advice for next time: DvD.

On the positive side, you should be able to get an EP45 board for less than $75, which is considerably cheaper than Data Recovery.

Good Luck with your recovery. If you find a work-around for getting the old RAID up on a different controller, let us know though.
Your best chance in recovering that would be to get a duplicate board and rebuild your array again with the exact same stripe size, same order, etc. If you can't get your hands on the same board, I'd surmise that another board using the same chipset and RAID controller MAY work as well.

Until you pull that off though, you may want to avoid any discussions about pictures and stuff.

It would be less expensive to buy a replacement board... heh.
Many guys think they know what women like, but our lists of priorities can often differ greatly.
