My "help to fix random annoyances" in Win7 thread.

1340 Views 36 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Zulli85
I can imagine myself making multiple threads about some annoyances that I come across in Windows 7. So to prevent myself from flooding the forums with a lot of threads asking different questions, I'll just bump this one if need be with new questions etc.

Let it be known that I want to change things mostly because I used XP for what seems like forever and I'm having a really hard time adjusting. Onto my first question..

How do I get rid of that ****ing icon in the taskbar that says "show hidden icons"?

Also, how do I access XP mode and is it worth it?

Click on it and it will give you a choice to show the different icons instead of hiding them. When you show the icons it hides, the little arrow disappears.

Ya but it doesn't give me the option to remove that icon entirely.

You either have the icon or you have all the icons it hides.

Go here for how to get XP mode...

Oh, I see. That worked. Thanks for the link too.

I'm guessing that Win7 automatically downloads and installs updates and drivers? What about my Nvidia drivers, where are they? Do I need to install them separately?

By default everything should work for the most part.. however I imagine it would be better if you just install the latest drivers from nVid's website, then you'll have the control panel etc.

Windows XP Mode is a virtual machine. To be honest, you will not need it. Yeah, I know you came directly from XP, but so did I. Trust me: you won't need it. It's not for most users.

As far as Windows Update: it behaves exactly the way it is set up. So, if you find that you don't like the default settings, then change them. Otherwise, it will always tell you when updates are ready for installation. If you want step-by-step instructions on this, then I can provide them.

Please note: it is always best to avoid downloading any drivers that Windows Update offers you. Instead, right-click on those updates and choose Hide. So, instead of installing those drivers, it is best to do as you have always done: install the manufacturer's driver. Note #2: the latest drivers are not always the best drivers to go with. But even so, it's still best to always at least try the latest drivers.

win7 does amazingly at downloading all of your drivers for you.....
that being said, its not very up to date on nvidia drivers, it usually keeps you with drivers from a few months prior... probably so people never get buggy drivers.

so, i reccomend you install nvidia drivers yourself

and with other things, they might not install the software packaged with your drivers, software you might want.

Hmm, thanks guys. I did try to install the Nvidia drivers through Windows update and I cannot locate the Control Panel. I will do as was suggested and install them as I always have. Thanks!

Another question...

Where/how do I disable services and how can I stop certain programs from loading when Windows starts?

This will answer the question about the services as thoroughly and with the highest quality possible:

http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm

I have 28 processes running when nothing but Task Manager is open.
I also only have the Volume Icon in the Notification Area (system tray). But I don't have that up-arrow thingy telling me that there are hidden icons either!

Oh, and I also have the classic Quick Launch toolbar. I love to wrangle Windows!

Oh, and here are 3 registry keys that I highly recommend you look at. If you're confused about an entry in one or more of these keys, then please Google it so that you know whether or not it's safe to delete!
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Wow6432Node\\Microso ft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\ CurrentVersion\\Run
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\C urrentVersion\\Run
(the spaces you see were added by vBulletein; it's Overclock.net's message board software. It's a security measure)

Looks like some good info there, thank you kindly.

You're very welcome.

I'm about to go to sleep, so if you have any questions, then I should be able to answer them tomorrow morning some time.

But of course, I'll probably still be here for the next half an hour. I'm so addicted.

I see you are on longer on but this can wait, or someone else can answer of course.

How do I get windows to dock on the sides of the screen? Dragging and dropping doesn't seem to work.

2 ways, actually! Check this out:
  • WinKey+Left or Right Arrow
  • Drag the Window so far over that the mouse cursor itself is at the edge of the screen. So, grab it from the edge closest to the edge of the screen.
Oh I am so very addicted.

And just for fun, use WinKey+Up Arrow and Down Arrow.

If you don't like Windows Snap, try using Acer GridVista. I think it is way more responsive and easier to use.

Aero Snap can be disabled entirely too. But I recommend using a tweaking utility such as Ultimate Windows Tweaker: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultima...indows-7-vista

Using the options within Windows to disable Aero Snap also disables Aero Shake. But using Ultimate Windows Tweaker to disable Aero Snap means that it doesn't mess with anything else. Unfortunately, Ultimate Windows Tweaker is probably the best free tweaking utility for Windows 7. And I said "unfortunately" because it's not all that great except for little things like this. I mean, there are many so-called "tweaks" in this little program that are no different from the options already built into Windows 7.

My favorite thing about this program is that you can install it, make the tweaks and then uninstall it without affecting the tweaks.

Perhaps I will check that out at some point. 2 more questions. All of my sound from Ventrilo comes out of only my center channel instead of all 5 channels. Any way to change that? Also, is it possible to disable ClearType? I configured it once but I've noticed that the text hurts my eyes, I'm up for any other suggestions you have. My monitor is in my sig.

Using an LCD without ClearType is going to be harder on your eyes than disabling it. So, I don't want to find out how to disable it and then provide those instructions (that is, if it's possible). My advice is to re-tune it. Or, increase the text size in Windows.

As for the sound coming out of the Center Channel: I don't know, nor would I know. However, I don't see how it would come out all 5 speakers since only surround effects come out of the surround speakers.

I suppose I can try to increase the size of the text. Sound (other people's voices) came out of all 5 channels when I was XP and I became accustomed to it. Not a big deal.
