My laptop DVD drive broke...

309 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Acreo Aeneas
Hi all, I am having troubles with my Dell Vostro. As the title says my DVD drive is broken. More specifically it does not show up in "my computer" and doesn't eject when I press the button. Seems almost as if it is fried or was magically disconnected.
Any advice?
P.S. Got this at christmas, not that old.

How old is the laptop? Is it still under warranty? If it is under warranty then call Dell Tech support. If the warranty is gone then check the bottom of the laptop and see if there is a small screw holding the drive in you laptop. You should be able to remove the drive by sliding it out of its bay and then reinstall it to make sure it is making good contact. See if it shows up in your device manager. If you do not see it then something is either bad on the dive itself or you laptop Mobo. If you have a disk stuck in the drive you can remove it by inserting a straightened out paper clip into the tiny hold on the front of the drive.

Ok well first things first. I did everything you said before before I even posted this (besides the dell tech support thing). But now magically it is working. I ejected the drive a few times with the paperclip and it finally got recognized. When I went into device manager, etc.. there was no trace of it, like it had been wiped off my system. I couldn't take the drive out of the bay without opening up the whole laptop
At least I think that is the case.
Not sure what else to say. It works now, thankfully...however, I am curious as to why on earth it would go away and come back all on its own. Perhaps just a loose ribbon cable?

It sounds like you have a loose connection inside the laptop somewhere. If it is under warranty then i recommend you call Dell.

Yes sir it has a warranty. Just the basic/default warranty though. Will that cover the DVD drive?
P.S. Reps for your guy's time.

Every computer company i can think of carries a 1 year limited warranty of somekind. It only being 3 months from christmas i would think you would be covered from faulty hardware.

Yes, the basic warranty will cover the broken/disconnected drive.

RMA the laptop and have Dell fix it for you. Don't open the laptop yourself or else you will void the warranty.
