My official phase change project thread.

I'm hunting for phase change cooling system components... Hopefully I'll complete building it in a couple of month, as i have lots of free time on my hands.
A friend of mine who's selling refrigerators offered me a compressor with 220 wattage(which is kind of high) and 'size 7', i wanted to know if it is suitable
to be used in a phase change cooling system.
And how does that measurement translates into double numbers, 1/4 for example.

I meant more like an visualisation...
An 3d image of how the block should lock...
The man who's preparing it for me has no clue about phase change and he will obviously find it difficult to understand those plans...

Any Ideas of programs that would help me generate 3d images of my evaporator to be?.

I'll post them here to get your approval and advice prior to sending it to my friend...

sorry, but i think you are making a big mistake! you should use actual refirgerant- i am building a phase change cooling system, and i am using r134a refrigerant. it is the standard in cars, AC and fridge. i am going by this article which i think is very good and i have built before.

as for your compressor, 1/4 is awesome--anything over 1/6 should get you good results, and the wattage doen't matter at all....

I did a quick search on google for free 3d software and blender is one option although that is more for animation and stuff. Typically, free software is subpar compared to commercial software; they usually have less user friendly interfaces and can't do as much.

To be honest you should probably look towards a CAD program if you want to do some really precise modeling, espcially if someone is going to machine parts for you. I have used AutoCAD Inventor and another program called Solidworks and they are both good for modeling. Other programs like AutoCAD 2006 and such are typically better for floor plans, layout, etc., but for making models and assemblies they can be a bit more cumbersome than programs like SolidWorks. They do tend to be VERY pricey, so if you really don't plan on doing any more modeling after this project, it is probably not worth it. If all else fails, do what engineers use to do... draw it by hand with a ruler, some grid paper, and a good ol' pencil.

EDIT: I would also be willing to offer my services since I have CAD software available through my school. If you can scan a handsketch of what you want with some dimensions, then I can give it a shot assuming it isn't obsurdly complicated.

I PMed you, and i would really like you to draw a copper evaporator for me with holes to match socket 939, I'll send measurements by msn messenger as soon as you contact me, it suppose to be two separate plates completely similar(hole, tunnel) except that the one designated to be at top will have a suction tube place which i will braze-in when I'll receive it, and an access point for the high pressure copper tube on the other side of the maze.
Now when i think about it, it will be much more easier for the guy to make the the top level flat, with access points, so it will isolate the liquid in the rooms of the maze in the bottom layer from.

Got the condenser and the compressor, pictures to follow.

Hello brother, It is very nice to see someone from Israel in our community, finally, i knew that eventually some one will join^^.
You should read several guides, starting from the guide translated by Big_white on fresh.co.il, it is the exact guide from overclockers.ru,
just slightly briefed...

That will only provide general info and it is not recommended to act upon this guide.

First read this guide in his entirety(2 parts):

Then start obtaining parts, buy a gas brazing device, which is a must, and costs about 100 nis+ oxygen tank, or 150 nis for the device that used in the guide above.
Generally you can get a hold of all the parts in a refrigerators second hand store, or from a lab which deals with cooling devices.
Don't let them rip you off.. my guy offered me condenser for refrigerator+1/3 HP compressor for 150 nis, I'm sure that i could break him, tho i was lucky enough to get those parts for free, out of the external part of an old air conditioner(the part that hangs out side the room, with the big fan in it).

Other parts such as 6mm external diameter tubes, which i will use, filter, suction tube, you must purchase.

As for the evaporator(the actual block) you may buy it from one of the greater guys like Chilly one which can be found in www.xtremesystems.com, or build it back here blue-white^^, like I'm doing, all you need is a good cube of pure copper and access to a CNC device, if you don't mind for it to look
nasty you can drill the maze in the block and clear the path by pouring acid int it and keeping it their for a day or two...

OK, so i opened up the air conditioning unit, after an 15 minutes of continual effort, guess what's my grand price?,
Dead ****roaches, yeah, yummy... I just wonder how much time they are laying their(Should be long taking in amount the enormous amount of rust on the condenser and the compressor), And how much of their juicy friends already turned to ashes...

OK, so here's are the good news, the compressor seems to be pretty large, and may still contain refrigerant because it seems to be sealed by those screwed driven into the pipes and the pipes are binded on the edges, probably for extra-seal...
The condenser doesn't seem to be damaged, ad also i suspect that there is a drier there somewhere in the air conditioner^^...

It just looks that way..., because it's centralized in the photo, it isn't by far larger then any regular compressor...
it still wouldn't fit into a standard ATX case tho, I need some standard sized item side by side with the compressor, to get it unto proportion.

how many cooling watts is it rated at if you can see a sticker or plate somewhere, it is bigger than mine if it cant fit into a case as mine will fit and is 1500 WATTS- unless yours is just fat and not tall

Omri, I already told you that it's overpriced because it is an dedicated-extreme cooling store that's selling it, get a nice 1/3 HP compressor from a nearby store\\ local technician.

Hmm, it was a 2/2.5 HP air conditioning unit i got it out of... i guess that it has 1000 Watts in it

And the gloves are to prevent possible infection wit Tetanus.

Done, Damn I've inhaled so much filthy dust!
Got a small scratch while extracting those parts...
Can't find the drier tho, Can it be in the indoor part of the air conditioner?.
Would WD-40 oil normally fit for a compressor?.
I'll probably also take the fan out to avoid from the headache of looking for a good sized fan later...
Are there any other useful components i can extract from the indoor part of the air conditioner?.
I might change a bit the loop and remove the strange controller that links the
compressor and condenser.

There are 4 wires, green-yellow wire, which is the ground wire.
green, yellow, and black which plug into the compressor it self,
ho can i bypass all the strange coils and just connect it to a standard socket?, which only has two plugs in it, or 3 at best.
I suppose that the ground wire goes to the button hole...
what about the other 3 wires that's left?.

There should be a large starting capacitor aswell, some wire's should come from that.

Here is a diagram that i found on Xtremesystems.org

There should be a condensor, it will look just like the evaporator on your air conditioning unit, the drier will be connected directly or indirectly with the bottom outlet on the condensor.

It me be the case that your unit may use the evap as a condensor aswell so there would be no need for the drier, don't quote me on that though.

When your converting the unit to use an Evap. block you'll need to cut the evaporator out, connect a new condensor in and braze a Drier on to the bottom out let, remember to have the drier facing at a downward's angle.

Then you take your cap tube off the bottom of the Drier and into your evap.

Oh by the way if your unit is indeed a 2.5 HP unit then it can handle 1800W

I do have a capacitor.. look carefully at the photos... I referred to it as "coil".

Also is that kind of powerful compressor will produce temperatures within safety?... with all the required safety manners of course.

I have an entire functional circle... It was a working air conditioning unit...
Any idea where i can find a simple and thoroughful explanation of that circle?.

And at what step should i invite a cooling technician to fill the compressor with profane?(It's a compressor from an air conditioning unit that might still have gas in it tho i doubt it because there is oil leaking from the tubes, Would profane be alright?).
My guess is just before the blazing, right?.
