My other graphics card failing? Surely not!?!

Some of you, probably none of you, will remember i posted a while back that one of my 8800GT cards i had in SLI mode had started to artifact, i eliminated one card and took out the bad one after testing on its own. The other day i got my copy of MW2. With all the settings to high my single 8800GT was doing ok, execpt ever so often the game would freeze for a second then resume (usually rendering me dead). It has now started to totally freeze and lock my whole system. Surely my other card isn't failing too? I have my e6850 oc'd to 3.3ghz (i am not very good at ocing) and thought that could be the problem, but i ran prime for 8 hours on 3.3ghz and it was fine. The only other obvious problem is drivers, or does it sound like other hardware, motherboard, HDD? Or is my other card dying now?

Could be the RAM, run memtest. Could be HDD, run CHKDSK.

I doubt it's the motherboard though, if it was the mobo then I think you would've gotten more serious problems than just freezing. Have you run any kind of stress program on your current 8800GT? Update the driver aswell, just to make sure that it's not that. What's your temps on your CPU and GPU btw?

When i ran prime the torture test said it tests "lots of ram" but i will try that too. I will also check the HDD. I have ran 3d mark 06 (i think that's what it's called) and my 8800GT was fine, when i had 2 in sli, and tried the bad card on it's own it would artifact and freeze doing that test. Card runs up to 97 on Crysis but never goes above 77 on COD. CPU runs around 35-40 idle and got to around 50 max running prime for 8 hours.

Ok good, I'm leaning towards the RAM atm (own experience with faulty RAM). Post back after you've run memtest86. Btw have you updated your 8800GT driver and what driver version are you currently using?

could be temps... 8800GT is a hot son of a gun. especially when in SLI the one on top get very very hot due to the one below helps it to melt. downclock ur cpu (just for testing), get rid of the dust, open case door & see whether it helps
Thanks for the replies. I will try later when i am home from work. I am running 191.07 WHQL latest drivers. To be honest i have been looking at upgrading to a GTX275 so if it turns out to be the 8800GT then it's not too bad!

It sure is. I have been thinking about a new motherboard and cpu too so maybe it is time to get building but i would rather sort this problem out than just buy my way out of it!

True true. Btw if you're going to upgrade, then I'd suggest you some faster RAM aswell. Why have 800MHz when you can have 1066 or even 1150 MHz? You'll also see an increase in performance

Yeh i will get some RAM too i think, my motherboard at the min only takes 800mhz max so if i get a new board then i will look at RAM too. If i do upgrade i think i will stick with LGA775 as i am not too bothered about i7 CPUs yet and i don't wanna spend a fortune.
