Will my corsair 450w psu power my rig and the 4870 even though the min psu requirement for it is 500w?

That should work just fine. I have a 9800GTX+ on a corsair 400 watt.
i had the 450 version with that card and it was running low on power. you need at least a vx550w and that will only just do did you know.
4870 is a 150w GPU but it is dual core rig. The 450vx can do 390w on 12v do you are fine for now. 450vx is better than many 550w psu out there.

Nah, i don't think its gonna cut it.
You're gonna run into problems especially if you OC your system and run lots of fans in there.

I ran an 8800GT and e2180 @ 3.5 (1.55v)Ghz with two HD's and 4 120mm fans for 8 hours. All on a 300w. You sir, will be fine.

i beg to differ but yeah, you can alway try it and get a new one if need be, you'll be sure then.

At that time i would probably hope to have 30 rep and sell you my 650tx cheap

trust me, the vx450 did no cut t out on my quad and 4870 hd rig. i really needed the vx550w, and that only just does the job. trust me you need the vx550w version to run your rig, not the vx450w.
dont make the mistake i did with the 450
My system consumes around 400W max and that's with a quad core so you should be fine.

But he doesn't have an OCed quad. Since he's only running a dual core, he will need ~50-75W less. He will be just fine with the vx450. You are just fine with the vx550.

I would also like to know how you knew the vx450 wasn't cutting it and how you know your vx550 still only barely powers your current rig.

i have had both PSU's with this rig. My brother has a thew gadgets to see how much power a thing uses up and how much power is availible so i tested both PSU's. my results were, the vx550w was far better for the job and the 450 could not cut it.
It will do just fine with a dual core , those req. are overrated.

What gadgets were they? What where your results? How did you come to those conclusions?

I sound like a teacher.

Personally I wouldn't run your rig on the 450, I would rather have the 550. But under most situations, the 450 would probably be able to handle it. It takes a PSU load tester and a oscilloscope at the least to judge whether a PSU is able to handle a given load. Anything else and it is a useless exercise.

it was a big box with lots of readings on it. my brother did it all and printed the results. he got the machine from someone who works for CustomPC. they use it to test and review power supplies.
i got crap performance with the 450 and the 550, lagging in games stock and temps were lower.
corsairs can handle more than you'd think

you'll be fine, i ran a GX2 on my HX520 for a while (going to change system info nao)

it should cut it.

corsair is a very good psu brand, as long as you dont go quad core and get a load of hdd's you will be fine i imagine.

those reccomended wattages are always overblown to be on the safe side.
