My Q9300 idling at 55-60c @ 3.45ghz ?

I just tested my cpu before this with prime 95 @ 3.50ghz.
while looking at real temp, after about 3 mins, the temps reached 76c or 77c before my pc froze. This just seems weird since I use the Noctua NF P12 cpu cooler.

anyone know why that is ?
Could something be wrong with my cooler ?

Specs:

Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4
Intel core 2 Quad 9300 @ 3.45GHz w/Noctua NF P12
Geforce 9800gx2
Corsair TX 750w PS
Corsair 2 x 2gb @ 5/6/6/21 xms2 ddr2 ram DHX or something, with the cooling case.
Antec P182 Case

That is way to hot, please go back down to default settings, and come back here.

Havent tried reseating my heatsink,
how do I do that ? just take the sink out and put it back in ?

temps shouldnt be that high for 1.3v

damn.. I don't think I got any thermal paste with this.
any other way ? or just reseat without the paste ?
Skullzaflare, the vcore used to be 1.375v when those temps ocurred
DO use thermal paste and a good quality paste such as arctic silver 5
Before removing the heatsink to remount, run your pc at stock speeds for a little while, it will heat the current formula up slightly, making it easier to remove without damaging it.

When reapplying, make sure you add about a bb drop of thermal paste, and make sure you screw the heatsink on all the way.
LOL you definitely need to be using some thermal paste man. I would recommend Arctic Silver 5 just because I have it and have no problems with it.

Your temps should NOT be nearly that high. Set all your hardware to stock clocks, put some thermal paste on, and let us know what your idle/load temps are. Once you get those in line with what they should be, then you can start overclocking again.

I'm also having a same kind of problem as you. I have tried E8400 @ 4.00GHz (1.35V) = +45C (idle) > full load = +70C, so, I'm really sad about that I bought a Noctua NH-U12P.
Thank you all, ill tell you whats going on after I get that paste. btw should i get the 3 grams or 12 ? is it that necessary in the long run ?

The guy above me, I don't think its the coolers fault, guys who built my computer mustve not put the paste ? or it just wore off.

so I think you should try doing the same thing as the guys who helped me here on this thread suggested to me.

theres your problem, going off your sig, you dont have a heatsink, just a fan blowing on it

do you know what heatsink it is?
1.37v is pushing towards not nice volts on the q9300, the chip does get very hot after exceeding 1.35v
3 gram tube is plenty
DO NOT put a bb sized dab, put a dab the size of a rice grain in the center of the chip

Im pretty sure im seeing a fan and on the other side of it, a heatsink.
Says thermalright on it :]
maybe i just forgot to mention it.

I know. The heatsink is connected well and I believe the problem is that I have only one fan there + case's fan.

oh yeah that might be it, i dont know whats the problem with mine, I hope its just the paste im lacking.

Sounds like you didn't mount it properly. In another rig I have an E6750 3.2Ghz @ 1.32v, idle 28c and load 48c with the Noctua NH-U12P.

It was the first time I built up a PC. I used NT-H1 silver paste for it. I spread it on E8400 and then I set the heatsink of NH-U12P on it and after that fan. Any ideas?

I feel clueless since it wasnt me who built this rig.
Andy, you mind linking a guide I could reffer toon how to mount and remove the fan+heatsink, or a noctua specific if necessary ?

Here is a very clear guide on how to install the Noctua:
