In my long search for a worthy mouse without defects i gave the Razer Imperator a try. I will compare it to my G500 because they are more or less competitors.
First, the positive things i have to say about the Imperator.
The shape is similar to the G500 but the deep thumb rest makes the mouse feel thinner, add that to the slightly lighter weight makes the Imperator feel more nimble compared to the G500. I also enjoyed the rubber skin on the top of the Imperator to the plastic that is found on the G500 top.
The Imperator also has a more slick glide compared to the G500 but the glides are pretty thin so i wouldn't expect them to last very long compared to the decently thick G500 glides.
If you don't lift your mouse off the mouse pad and reposition it a lot the mouse tracks very smoothly. I was expecting a headache with different surfaces like i had with the CM sentinel because it shares the same phillips twin eye sensor but the Imperator worked fine on all of my mouse pads. A small detail that some might be interested in, the lift off distance is identical to the G500 on the puretrak talent cloth pad, they both track at the height of one DVD but stop tracking at two.
Now to the problems i had with the Razer Imperator and why it is being returned.
The number one deal breaker i had with the Imperator is with its Z-axis tracking problem. This is when you lift the mouse and set it back down the mouse cursor jumps and will not be where it should be, this makes the mouse unusable for me unfortunately. If i pick up the mouse and set it back down exactly where it was the cursor will always move a large distance diagonally down and right. I thought i was setting it down at an angle or something but no matter what angle i set the imperator down the cursor or cross hair will always move down and to the right. I made a quick video to demonstrate the problem, this is just me quickly tapping the mouse up and down off the mouse pad to magnify the problem. As you can see the G500 is very stable and does not suffer from this problem at all.
The sides are too slick, Razer needs to apply that great rubber coating on the entire mouse, it would be a great improvement.
I don't like the left and right click buttons on the imperator, the clicking feels stiff and sticky. The G500 buttons rebound quickly with a crisp feeling that i prefer.
I think that about covers my experience with the Razer Imperator, remember this is just my opinion, others may be perfectly happy with their Imperator.
