My speed is half what it should be...

After buying a 2-Wire 2700HG-B, my speed seems to have been cut in half. My old piece of ... poop modem died, so I upgraded to one that is wireless, as per the recommendation of AT&T. The problem is somewhat intermittent, but most of the time my speed test says that I am getting around .61 megabits per second download. The higher/better speed test shows what my speed was before I switched to the new modem. What could be causing this? I feel like I am using dial-up. I mean it was pretty slow for DSL before that, but hey, when you pay $30 a month grand total, what can you expect? But it was still plenty fast enough to browse web pages with ease. Now I have to wait like 5-10 seconds just for a page to get done loading.

But like I said, it does speed up to where it should be, sometimes. But most of the time it hovers around 0.61 download. What could this be? I called AT&T, and they said the lines looked good from their end, but they could see that I was getting some "interference". The only thing I have in line is a coupler, to extend the line. It looks like this, but it's just a simple female-female coupler for extending a regular old phone line.

But I really don't see how that could be causing the problem, cause I had it when I had the old modem and it didn't give me problems then. I didn't start having this problem till I switched over to the new modem, and set up a WAP security. Yet the rep from AT&T insists that coupler is the problem.

Crap. Well you know, just one of those little line couplers you can get a wal-mart. All it does, is let you plug one phone line, into another phone line. Via a female to female little coupler that is like 1.5 inches long. The pic shows what one side of the little coupler might look like.

So... you are talking about a splitter?

If so, then yes, that splitter is most likely causing your problem.
IMO return the 2wire modem and go on ebay and get a speed stream 4100 for around $10-$15. i got a 2nd one so i could mode it just in case i messed it up. so fare never had any problems *knocks on wood*. i hear alot of problems with the 2wire modems.

if not try to update the firmware on it.

No it doesn't split the line at all. It just takes a single line and connects it to another single line. There is only 1 inlet, and one outlet. Or maybe it just has two inlets. One for each phone line.
The coupler won't have anything to do with it.

Connect your computer to the mdm via ethernet and try testing again while in safe mode, see if there is a difference (there often is).

And next time you are talking to AT&T, ask them if they have an on-network speedtest site/server of their own you can test on, speedtest.net can be inaccurate for multiple reasons...

FYI, the AT&T people are BSing you. They cant tell if the "line looks good" with DSL, only that there IS a connection (which you already know) and if the modem is signing in through their BRAS server.

Also, what speed are you actually paying for?
