I've heard many times people saying that even a 2500k/3570k at stock clock was a bottleneck. Let's investigate.

Does overclocking improve general graphic performance of AMD R9 290? Let's find out....

3D Mark 2011 Basic Edition

Performance Test - 720P

Stock Intel CPU 3570K (core0: 3.8ghz, core1: 3.8ghz, core2: 3.7ghz, core3: 3.6ghz) and MSI R9 290 Gaming (core 977mhz / memory 1250mhz)

Run 1: Graphic: 12170 Physics: 6573
Run 2: Graphic: 12173 Physics: 6573

Stock CPU ; MSI R9 290 Gaming (core 1075mhz / memory 1375mhz)

Run 1: Graphic: 13302 Physics: 6569
Run 2: Graphic: 13348 Physics: 6610

Intel CPU 3570K (all core @ 4.1ghz) and MSI R9 290 Gaming (core 1075 mhz / 1375 mhz)

Run 1: Graphic: 13224 Physics: 7180
Run 2: Graphic: 13300 Physics: 7160

Result: BUSTED!

Only Testing 3DMark? Test some games like BF3/4.

I think what op needs to test is if the card is working properly.

Yep I really hope that's not graphics scores

your guys are right, score are stupidly low. I know the card is working properly since i'm getting 63-64 fps in unigine valley extremehd. Something is wrong with my 3dmark install

2500k and the 3570k will not bottleneck a 290/290x. Even if they did a small OC would get past the problem.

true. a small oc will help. in some games, at stock, it may not pose a problem but others . . . the minimum fps may not be acceptable where an increase of 5 - 10 fps may make a huge difference in game play. check out the combined scores and combined test scores.

you can tell which one has the cpu at stock. also, in some games, an oc will affect gpu usage. one mid-high end gpu might not show this but 2 or more . . .

I Think allot of people cant accept what the term Bottlenecking really is. One component holding the rest back in performance.
Like the CPU Limiting the maximum gaming performance/fps in games.

My 2500k bottlenecks my hd7970 if i run without MSAA on Battlefield 4.
(I dont like MSAA because of the added input lagg).

A 2500K on 5.0Ghz is still a powerfull CPU, but it CAN even Bottleneck a HD7970 on 1080p.

So i geuss a stock 3570k + a R9 290X aint a golden combination.
(Yes you can run 4x / 8x MSAA on all games, but thats like ''cheating'' to up the GPU Usage)

And with bottlenecking i mean running no V-Sync, and not running 99-100% constant GPU Usage.

So if a 5.0Ghz 2500k cant push a OCed HD7970 to 99-100% constant Usage (In BF4 Without MSAA)

Then how is a stock 3570k supposed to push a 290x to 100% constant usage?

If this conversation is about BF4, all of your problems will be solved with an i7.

2600K > 4670K.

X, i play BF4 MP 64 with my i7 at stock and HT off with the 290 but with mantle. it is BF3 MP that i have to oc my cpu.

that's why I said ''General graphic performance'' not battlefield 4 64 player cpu bottleneck.

Then use proper benchmarks. Graphic test 3dmark is pure gpu limited. You will get the same results even with a 8350

I'll tell ya this much: Running BF4 in Mantle, even my FX8350 @ stock doesn't bottleneck my 290. Gives me a constant 100% GPU usage (only dips are on death screens etc). Additionally, overclocking the 290 from 1007 to 1037mhz core speed gives me a solid 5-10 fps increase on minimum AND maximum.

ON THE OTHER HAND: Playing CPU-bound games like Skyrim i get huge bottlenecks (mainly in towns.) Just like my old 1100T, this 8350 even @ 4.8ghz will drop me down 45 fps when walking around towns -- this FPS WILL increase if I decrease my ENB settings -- but only because it becomes less graphically demanding; the GPU usage stays the same.
